Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green (Japanese: ポケットモンスター 赤・緑 Pocket Monsters Red and Green) were the first Pokémon games ever released in Japan, on February 27, 1996. The English equivalents are Pokémon Red and Blue, released in the US on September 30, 1998. A minor revision was released several months later, Pokémon Blue. A sister game with minor gameplay changes was released later, Pokémon Yellow.
Development of Pokémon Red and Green started in 1990.
Although it seems like Pokémon Green was never released outside of Japan, the English version of Pokémon Blue is based on the Japanese Pokémon Blue's engine and graphics, with the Japanese Pokémon Green's wild and trade Pokémon. Similarly for the English version of Pokémon Red: it was based on Japanese Pokémon Blue's engine and graphics, with the Japanese Pokémon Red's wild and trade Pokémon.
These two games were the namesake of the Generation III remakes of the Generation I games, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, even in regions where Pokémon Blue was paired with Red.
