The Pirate Trainer is a one-time trainer Ash Ketchum battles in the first Pokémon movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. He is a muscular and proud-looking figure, and has been giving his name due to his head bandana which has a traditional pirate symbol on it. Although his name is unofficial, it is noted by fans and in an official comic-adaption of the film. The Pirate Trainer approaches Ash and friends when they have stopped for lunch on a field. The Pirate Trainer hints he has been looking for Ash for a long time for a Pokémon battle. Ash eagerly accepts the battle, despite his claim he is too weak to work and battle.
The Pirate Man battles Ash, using a Donphan (the fourth second-generation Pokémon to be revealed) against Ash's Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur is launched into the air thanks to Donphan's Rollout attack, allowing him to charge up solar energy and defeats Donphan with a Solar Beam. The Pirate Trainer sends out his Machamp agaisnt Ash's Squirtle. Squirtle easily knocks out Machamp with a Bumblebee attack. Frustrated and desperate to win, the Pirate Trainer breaks battle rules and sends out his three remaining Pokémon, Venomoth, Pinsir, and Golem, to take down Ash. Pikachu hops in and ends the battle with colossal blast of electricity, taking out all three of the Pirate Trainer's Pokémon. The Pirate Trainer is in disbelief and screams in despair. He is not seen again, but is presumed he rushed off to heal his defeated Pokémon.
