Its appearance is based on that of a fully-grown lion. It has three rings on the backs of its legs, similar to Luxio (which has two) and Shinx (which has one).

Origin
Luxray is based on an adult male lion.
Name origin
Luxray is derived from lux, a measure of brightness, and x-ray, refering to its x-ray eyes.
Its Japanese name is a combination of Roentgen, the physcisist who discovered X-rays, and トラー, Japanese for "tiger."
