Hail | Snow Warning |
Hail (Japanese: あられ Hail) is a weather condition introduced in battle in Generation III. It was introduced in the overworld in Generation IV.
It will last for five turns if created using Hail (eight if the user is holding a Icy Rock) or Snow Warning (Generation VI only). If encountered in the overworld or created using Snow Warning (prior to Generation VI), it will last until replaced.

Effects
In battle
Advantages
- Activates the following Abilities: Forecast, Ice Body, and Snow Cloak.
- Changes Weather Ball to a Ice-type move and doubles its power.
- Changes Castform to its Hail Form.
- Allows Blizzard to bypass accuracy check (Generation V onward), or makes its accuracy 100% (in Generation IV).
- In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, allows Blizzard to hit through Protect and Detect 30% of the time.
Disadvantages
- Damages all Pokémon that do not have the Ice-type or the Abilities Ice Body, Snow Cloak, Magic Guard, or Overcoat.
- Causes Solar Beam to deal only half its damage.
- Causes Moonlight, Synthesis, and Morning Sun to recover ¼ of max HP (half the normal amount in Generation II).
Outside of battle
Since Generation IV, Sweet Scent will fail if it is hailing in the area, or if any other weather condition is present.
Variations
Light snow
Found in Snowpoint City (Also occasionally found in Dendemille Town). No battles take place outside any buildings in Snowpoint City or Dendemille Town so it is unclear if any weather condition is assumed in battle.
Heavy snow
Snow falls more quickly and heavily, falling diagonally from one of the top corners of the screen (leaving the impression that it is being carried by strong winds), and sometimes appears to be mixed with hail. Found on Route 216, Acuity Lakefront and sometimes in Icirrus City and Route 8 during the Winter.
Blizzard
Snow whips around, making it difficult to see. Found on Route 217, and less often on Route 216.
