Ash's Noibat (Japanese: サトシのオンバット Satoshi's Onbat) is the fifth Pokémon that Ash caught in the Kalos region.
History
In XY076, Noibat was in its Egg when it was first found by Hawlucha, who was doing training exercises. The Wrestling Pokémon brought the Egg back to Ash and his friends, where it was about to hatch. In response, Ash, Pikachu, Fletchinder, Hawlucha, Bonnie, Dedenne, Pancham and Chespin covered the Egg to keep it warm whilst it hatched, with Fletchinder using its Flame Body Ability to help.
When it hatched, Noibat first saw Ash and was introduced to him and his Pokémon. Noibat was very stressed out, so it let out a powerful Supersonic attack, hurting everyone's ears. It was eventually calmed down by Ash. Afterwards, the group found apples for it with Noibat using its ultrasonic waves to sense the apples' taste. Noibat then attempted to fly, but failed causing it to launch another Supersonic until it was calmed down by Ash again. The group decided to help teaching Noibat how to fly with Hawlucha and Fletchinder aiding it. Despite Noibat improving he was still unable to fly. Whilst training with Hawlucha and Fletchinder, Team Rocket appeared and fired a net at Noibat whom they wanted to evolve into a Noivern. In the process of the kidnapping, they also captured Hawlucha, who attempted to protect it.
The two Flying-types were then tied up to a tree. Noibat tried to use Supersonic on them, but failed due to Team Rocket's soundproof earphones. Hawlucha managed to cut the rope using its nails and tried to sneak away along with Noibat, but they were soon spotted by Team Rocket. Hawlucha successfully escaped with Noibat, after attacking Inkay with High Jump Kick, and knocking it down together with Pumpkaboo. As they were still being pursued by the trio, Noibat spotted a cave and told Hawlucha to hide in there. Inside the pitch black cave, Jessie, James and Meowth tried to capture them and lure them into a trap set by Inkay and Pumpkaboo. Noibat used its ultrasound waves to sense the trio and had Hawlucha kick off their soundproof headphones, which allowed Noibat to use Supersonic, causing Team Rocket to flee. After Ash appeared and defeated Team Rocket with Frogadier and Pikachu, the two Flying-types left the cave. Afterwards, Noibat accepted Ash's offer to go with him and allowed itself to be captured in a Poké Ball. It was then let out and it trained to fly with Hawlucha and Fletchinder again.
In XY077, it continued to train how to fly along with Fletchinder and Hawlucha, Noibat struggled at tackling high winds, but Hawlucha taught Noibat how to deal with it. Afterwards the group noticed a Starly, Staravia and Staraptor. They went to the source of this, the Pokémon Sky Relay, where they discovered that the birds came from the Sky Relay Champion, Ornis. Later Ash used Fletchinder, Hawlucha and Noibat in the relay. Ash used Noibat in the last segment of the race. It started out in first place, but Starly was right behind it and had the advantage since Noibat hadn't fully mastered flying yet. Although it remained in first place initially, it encountered high winds, which Noibat struggled with. Starly used this to its advantage to pass Noibat and gain first place. After remembering its training with Hawlucha and everyone's support, it managed to overcome this and managed to get neck-to-neck with Starly. It eventually ended up second after barely losing to Starly, and was disappointed at first, but found that it had made its friends happy by learning to fly.
Personality and characteristics
After hatching, it quickly imprinted on Ash, presumably because it is who Noibat first saw. It was also impressed by Hawlucha's abilities in its debut. As a newborn Pokémon it struggled to fly and was upset when it failed. When stressed or upset it lets out a powerful Supersonic attack. In XY077, it did the same when it was happy. Like all Noibat, it has an affinity toward fruit, but can be a picky eater and refused to eat apples which it thought were bad.
Noibat has the ability to use ultrasonic waves, which it first used in XY076 to tell if a fruit was bad or good and it later used these to spot Team Rocket in pitch darkness, allowing Hawlucha to attack them without being seen.
Noibat is shown to have a very parent-child like relationship with Ash, presumably because he is who Noibat first saw. As such, Noibat is able to be calmed down easily by Ash, and very much enjoys being around him. It also has a close relationship with Hawlucha and Fletchinder, since they helped Noibat learn how to fly and seems to enjoy being with them. Noibat also seems to take after Ash, and acts very similarly to him, and seems to take inspiration from him. When in the Sky rally race, Noibat was determined to win, and managed to come second place due to Ash's encouragement. Much like Ash's Gliscor, Noibat seems to want Ash's approval, and is upset when it is denied a chance to prove itself, as shown when it was very upset at narrowly loosing the sky rally. Once Ash gave Noibat the praise it desired, it quickly cheered up.
