The term grounded is used to describe a Pokémon that can be affected by damaging Ground-type moves and several other associated effects.
Ungrounded Pokémon
Several characteristics may make a Pokémon ungrounded.
A Pokémon is ungrounded if any of the following apply (and there is no effect that makes it grounded).
- It has the Flying type.
- It has the Ability Levitate.
- It is holding an Air Balloon.
- It is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis.
Grounded Pokémon
By default, grounded Pokémon are simply those that are not ungrounded. However, there are also several effects that will negate a Pokémon's ungrounded status, making it grounded.
A Pokémon will be grounded if any of the following apply.
- It is holding an Iron Ball.
- It is under the effect of IngrainGen. IV+ or Smack Down/Thousand Arrows.
- Gravity is in effect.
In addition, the move Roost will remove the user's Flying type for one turn, meaning it will become grounded for that turn if its type was the only property or effect making it ungrounded.
Also, if a grounded Poison-type Pokémon is sent out while Toxic Spikes are on that Pokémon's side of the field, it will remove them; if the Poison-type Pokémon is ungrounded, the Toxic Spikes will remain.
Immunities of ungrounded Pokémon
Ungrounded Pokémon are immune to all damaging Ground-type moves, except Thousand Arrows.
Ungrounded Pokémon are also immune to:
- the entry hazards Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web.
- the move Rototiller.
- the effects of terrain.
- the Ability Arena Trap.
