Wattson first appeared in Watt's with Wattson?. He filled his Gym in Mauville City with lots of traps, pit-falls, roller coasters, and other tricks and pranks, much like Lt. Surge in Vermilion City. Wattson believed his gadgetry was not only hilarious, but kept trainers on their toes.

One of Wattson's tricks was a robotic Raikou that ended up super-charging the electricity in Pikachu. As a result, Ash's Pikachu was able to completely wipe out Wattson's team on it's own, using a series of super-powerful Thunderbolts.

Losing so easily really depressed the usually cheerful Gym Leader. Wattson left everyone a note saying that he went away to think. Uncharacteristicly glum, he wandered off to the local power plant and met a friendly Electrike.

Afterwards Team Rocket stole all the Electric-type Pokémon from the power plant, and Wattson, Ash, Brock, Max, and May pursued them.

Wattson used the Raikou robot to stop them in their tracks, while Pikachu and Electrike used Iron Tail and Bite to free the wild Pokémon. Ash tried to return the Dynamo Badge, but Wattson told him to keep it. Electrike decided to stay with Wattson.

Wattson again appeared in Manectric Charge. He saved most of the group's Pokémon from another Team Rocket kidnapping attempt. The battle caused Electrike to evolve into Manectric. They were on their way back to Petalburg City, but Ash and his friends took time out for a battle.

Ash's Torkoal fought against Wattson's Manectric in a fierce battle but Torkoal lost.

His English voice actor is Dan Green.

In the games

Wattson's title is "The cheerfully electrifying man!" The citizens of Mauville think of him as "eccentric", and one of his students affectionately referred to him as a "tough coot". His prefers to employ Electric-type Pokémon, and is a generally jovial man.

Wattson founded Mauville; he once had a desire to convert Mauville in an expansion project, but he abandoned that plan. Instead, he installed switch-controlled dynamos in his Gym that create doors of electricity.

In addition to the Dynamo Badge, Wattson gives out TM34, Shock Wave, in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald.

If the player returns to Mauville after getting Surf, Wattson will ask him or her to go to New Mauville on an errand for him. If the player completes the task, Wattson will give TM24, Thunderbolt, as a sign of his appreciation.

You can re-challenge Wattson after defeating the Elite Four. This is only possible in Emerald.

In the Pokémon Special manga

Wattson is the cheerful Gym Leader of Mauville, who enjoys cracking jokes that are having puns on people's names. His motto was "Be cheerful, no matter when or where". He doesn't care when or where the battles take place, every challenge to him qualifies as a gym battle. He doesn't even care about the result, and would often give out badges as long as his challengers do their best. Because of this attitude, Sapphire was very annoyed with him.

When Sapphire first met the elderly gym leader, he and the Trick Master was trying to locate a rampaging Donphan with tricks developed by the latter. But they had mistaken Sapphire as the Donphan and trapped her and her Pokémon with the tricks. Sapphire inquired whether the turning door on the ground was also part of their traps. But it was actually the secret entrance to New Mauville, the secret underground city Wattson and Trick Master had been looking for a long time.

Mauville had been having the problem of land shortage and overcrowding because of the growing number of children in the city. As both Wattson and Trick Master cherish children a lot, they hope they can find this secret city for them. Later, Sapphire saved Wattson from an overcharged generator and got the New Mauville, which is a large amusement park, into operation. Thankful for her help, Wattson gave her the Dynamo Badge.

After being informed about Team Magma and Team Aqua's schemes, he sided with Team Magma because of his city's problem of land shortage. When the two ancient Pokémon were awakened, he was assigned to fight against Kyogre, and later Amber, one of the Aqua Admins. He was knocked into the sea after being attacked from behind by a Shedinja, but Sapphire's Wailord saved his life. He was left on the Pokémon Association's aircraft as he was too injured to continue fighting.

Quotes

"I've given up on my plans to convert the city, I have. And so, I put my time into making door traps in my Gym. Oh? Now, what are you doing here? What's that? You say you've gotten past all my rigged doors? Wahahahah! Now, that is amusing! Then, I, Wattson, the Leader of Mauville Gym, shall electrify you!"

"Wahahahah! Fine, I lost! You ended up giving me a thrill! Take this Badge!"

"I swell with optimism, seeing a promising young Trainer like you!"

Trivia

  • His Japanese Leader title is 笑ウエレクトリックマン.
  • Like Lt. Surge is in Kanto, Wattson is the third Gym Leader encountered on a journey through Hoenn, and is similarly enamored with trap doors and Template:Type2 Pokémon.
  • Wattson's Magneton in the games is quite underleveled, as Magneton must evolve from Magnemite at Lv. 30, and Magneton cannot be caught at such a low level in Hoenn.
