Benkei

There are some parallels between this episode and the famous Japanese story/folklore of Benkei. Benkei was a big warrior, usually depicted with a naginata (a type of big lance), that challenged samurai on duels to win their swords. Until he dueled against Minamoto no Yoshitsune (a smaller warrior) on a bridge and was defeated, later becoming Yoshitsune's loyal retainer. After fighting many battles together, they were encircled in a castle. Yoshitsune went into the castle to commit seppuku and Benkei stood guard at the bridge in front of the gate to protect Yoshitsune during the ritual. The soldiers were afraid of coming near Benkei and engaging in combat, so they showered him with arrows. A famous passage from this story tells Benkei died standing upright. So, in this context, Ash's Galarian Farfetch'd would be Benkei (strong, with big weapon, challenging for duels on a bridge, being defeated and joining the winner and also standing upright after being defeated), and Goh's Kantonian Farfetch'd/Ash's Riolu would be Minamoto no Yoshitsune ("sword fight" with a lighter weapon/winning the duel).--KurowaSan (talk) 17:24, 6 July 2020 (UTC)

I think that's a little loose, in the same vein you could say Farfetch'd is Little John to Riolu's Robin Hood - which would have British undertones what with them being in Galar, there would need to be more explicit evidence for it to be a legitimate reference Azure/ChromeVoid42 (talk) 19:48, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Benkei is also known for always carrying seven weapons, not just a naginata.--ShallowShaddoll (talk) 21:14, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
I believe that at least the bridge duel thing and the standing upright after defeat are very direct references to Benkei's story, as those are the things that usually stand out the most when this story is referenced. --KurowaSan (talk) 21:51, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
