Link templates are a feature of Bulbapedia designed to save typing time when a page name was disambiguated, as well as to link many pages and topics more easily.

Why they are used

Link templates allow users to quickly comply with Bulbapedia's style guidance around page naming. Multiple categories of pages having suffixes for clarity; these include Pokémon like Bulbasaur, types, Egg Groups, and moves. This logic is also applied to Pokémon characters; for example, Ash owns a Pikachu, but there are other Pikachu in universe, and even other versions of Ash's Pikachu.

Advantages

While oftentimes on Wikipedia, one may often find a problem in navigating between articles, such is not the case with Bulbapedia. Unlike the issue with the element mercury followed by the element thallium, and the planet Mercury followed by the planet Venus, Ash's Pikachu followed by Ash's Caterpie, with link templates, has no conflict at all with Pikachu (Pokémon) followed by Raichu (Pokémon).

Image templates

A subclass of link template, image templates can be used to link to an image that is named in a similar manner to others. Images that are good candidates for image templates are utilized across a wide number of pages. Examples of images that meet these criteria are type icons.
