The Legacy format of the Pokémon Trading Card Game was a format used in Pokémon Trading Card Game Online. It was added to Pokémon Trading Card Game Online on March 29th, 2016 [1] , as a way for players to continue using cards from the HeartGold & SoulSilver Series after the Unlimited format was removed from the Versus and Event modes. With the discontinuation of Pokémon Trading Card Game Online, Legacy is no longer playable in an official capacity.

Only cards released in the HeartGold and SoulSilver Series and the Black & White Series are legal to play in Legacy. Uniquely among TCG formats, cards were never added to the Legacy format. The same card pool was used from the format's creation until its demise. However, some fan communities enforced unofficial bans on certain cards [2].

If a card in an non-Legacy-legal expansion is a reprint of an card from a Legacy-legal expansion, all prints of the card can be played in an Legacy-legal expansion-legal deck (e.g. Furious Fists Energy Switch). However, some cards significantly differ in wording between newer prints and older prints; these cards can be used in Legacy, as the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online will always use the effect of the latest printing of the card.

Notably, while Legacy uses only cards from old Series, it always follows the current rules of the Pokémon Trading Card Game. This means that as new Series were released, the rules the Legacy format followed changed along with them [3].
