On July 1, 2003, the first Pokémon Center Sapporo opened temporarily in the ANA Hotel in Sapporo (now the ANA Crowne Plaza), until October 31, 2003.[2] The store was part of a collaboration between All Nippon Airways (the operators of the original Pokémon Jets) and The Pokémon Company. The store opened for a second time, in the same location, from July 1 to September 30, 2004.[3] For the third opening (from July 1 to October 2, 2005),[4] a Sapporo Pikachu event Pokémon was distributed for Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, FireRed and LeafGreen for a limited time.[5] The store opened in the same location again from November 17, 2005 to April 9, 2006,[6] and for a final time from July 1 to October 29, 2006.[7]
On March 6, 2009, Pokémon Center Sapporo reopened as a permanent store in the Sapporo Esta mall; the sixth permanent Pokémon Center in Japan.[8][9] To celebrate this opening, a Pokémon Center Eevee event Pokémon was distributed for Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum between March 6 - 19, 2009,[10] and a Pikachu Farm Special Puzzle gift, with artwork commemorating the opening of the store, was given to guests. A selection of merchandise was also made available for purchase.[9]
On December 1, 2016, Pokémon Center Sapporo moved to its current location on the 8th floor of the Daimaru Sapporo department store.[1] Prior to opening, a "pre-opening" event was held on November 30, 2016, where 750 people were able to visit the store early by winning one of two lotteries (one ran by Television Hokkaido, and one by Pokémon Center Online). A Pokémon Center Sapporo Alolan Vulpix event Pokémon was distributed for Pokémon Sun and Moon during the "pre-opening" event and then from December 1, 2016 to January 31, 2017.[11] This distribution was then repeated at the other Pokémon Centers and Pokémon Stores across Japan between February 1 to March 12, 2017.[12]
To celebrate the opening, customers at Pokémon Centers, Pokémon Stores, or Pokémon Center Online, who brought five or more Pokémon Trading Card Game booster packs also received a Sapporo's Pikachu promo card.[13] Customers at physical stores who spent over ¥4,000 during the opening period received an Alolan Vulpix & Pikachu keychain, with an exclusive extra design being available at Pokémon Center Sapporo. Additionally, customers at the new store were also given a Pikachu & Alolan Vulpix Clear Card as a gift.[14] A range of commemorative merchandise was also made available.[15]
