Dream World Sprites

Dream World sprites have better quality so why won't we scale down bigger images (if exist) instead of showing smaller ones?--Rocket Grunt (Report To Me) 16:08, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

Just the name of the file after #if: is not sufficient. I recommend surrounding the file name with {‍{filepath:xyz|nowiki}‍}, where xyz is the file name (nowiki makes sure the content will not be linked). Test: https://staging.archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/f/fb/0001Bulbasaur.png is the path to the Sugimori artwork of Bulbasaur. I have created a template for checking for existence of files: User:C.Ezra.M/fileexist. You just specify three parameters:
  1. File name.
  2. Value to show if that file exists.
  3. Value to show if that file doesn't exist.
Have a nice day, --TheICTLiker4 20:13, 9 March 2020 (UTC)
The game sprites are the perfect size for the purposes for which we use them, so I can't see any reason to replace them with artwork intended to be viewed at much higher resolutions. It would be like displaying scaled-down Pokémon artwork in place of menu sprites. (Also, the Global Link artwork is not at consistent sizes, so they would all need to be re-uploaded in order to do this.) --SnorlaxMonster 04:32, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
That's why it would be scaled down to 24 pixels, see: Bag Rare Candy Sprite.png to this Dream Rare Candy Sprite.png.--Rocket Grunt (Report To Me) 10:01, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
This just boils down to your personal preference. Why would we use downscaled artwork over bag sprites that work just as well. Quality? I don't see how that matters...--ForceFire 10:10, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
And adding an if clause to the template is completely unnecessary. Simple is best.--ForceFire 10:13, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Of course that's my opinion, that's why I'm making this suggestion. This isn't that complicated. I've added if clause to ensure everything would still work with this little change if there is no Dream World artwork. If you want simplicity, then we can just replace Bag Sprite to Dream one.--Rocket Grunt (Report To Me) 10:35, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Some items not having a dream world artwork is more reason not to use it. It's going to look very inconsistent when it's used on templates and the sprite varies from dream world artwork to bag sprite.--ForceFire 12:19, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Only one if no reason at all. I ensure you there won't be any visible inconsistency.--Rocket Grunt (Report To Me) 21:37, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
If you ask me, the artwork you scaled down above has less character than the sprite. This shouldn't be surprising, because small-scale images need to be designed to work well at that scale; by contrast, artwork is not meant to be shrunk and easily loses out by comparison when you do so. There's just no good reason for us to use artwork over sprites intended for the sizes we prefer. Tiddlywinks (talk) 22:47, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
