(Japanese: 氷の戦い！冷たい瞳のグルーシャ Battle of Ice! The Cold-Eyed Grusha) is the 63rd episode of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, and the 1,295th episode of the Pokémon animated series. It first aired in Japan on August 30, 2024.
Plot
Liko, Roy and Dot have arrived at Glaseado Mountain, on their way to Glaseado gym for Liko's battle against Grusha, but it's such a long walk up the mountain that even Roy starts to feel a chill. Seeking to find Grusha elsewhere, the group heads off to a nearby Ski resort, but due to the endless walking Dot becomes exhausted and collapses, thinking to herself that she is dead. Dot and her friends suddenly see a group of tourists riding Cetoddle in a bob sledding event.
The trio and their Pokemon decide to ride the Cetoddle down the mountain to pass time before Liko's gym battle. All three have fun bob sledding on their respective Cetoddle until Liko's Cetoddle starts going downhill too fast, Liko's Floragato then uses her vine to grab a nearby tree branch to slow them down, preventing them from falling off what appears to be a cliff, Dot and Roy soon arrived and checked on Liko informing her that she would have been fine since the "Cliff" was actually just a small ditch, to Liko's shock. Suddenly Grusha appears nearby with his Cetoddle to the group's surprise and coldly tells Liko that if she has time to play before their battle then she must be confident in winning, before promptly walking off.
Liko and her friends then rested off at a nearby lodge, where they learn from the owner that Grusha used to be a talented Pro Snowboarder that won many tournaments, however one day he got his leg injured avoiding a Cetoddle downhill that caused him to retire from his snowboarding career and focus on being a gym leader instead. The owner further notes that weirdly Grusha should still be able to snowboard competitively after recovering from his injury, but the possible reason he retired is probably because he couldn't achieve the same tournament results as before due to his perfectionist personality.
Liko and her friends soon return to the gym for her Implementation test battle. Surprisingly, Grusha's Cetoddle playfully walks and confronts Liko on the battlefield, before Grusha himself appears in time for the battle. The 2 on 2 battle soon begins. Liko sends out Floragato, while Grusha sends out Cetitan. Roy is shocked by the size of the Terra Whale Pokémon, scanning it with his Pokédex. Floragato moves nimbly around Cetitan before striking first with quick attack but it has little effect on her bulky opponent, Cetitan then uses Icicle spear with Floragato dodging its attacks, before unleashing an ineffective Magical Leaf that doesn't even faze the Terra whale Pokemon. Cetitan then quickly unleashes an Ice Spinner which is super effective and hits Floragato, surprising everyone with its attack speed. Liko then recalls Floragato and sends out Hattrem, Cetitan unleashes Icicle spear once again but Liko commands Hattrem to use confusion, sending the ice spears back at Cetitan to damage it. Cetitan soon recovers and uses Liquidation while Hattrem clashes against its attack with her Brutal Swing, but Grusha has Cetitan use Ice Spinner afterwards which overpowers and defeats Hattrem.
After Hattrem's defeat Liko recalls her for Floragato. Floragato once again struggles against Cetitan's superior defenses and barely dodges an Ice Spinner but then Liko has a cunning plan, she has Floragato fire Magical Leaf into Cetitan's more vulnerable mouth the moment it tries to unleash Icicle Spear, choking and temporarily incapacitating it. Grusha is slightly impressed by this feat and recalls Cetitan in favor of his ace Altaria.
Dot notes that Altaria has a big advantage over Grass-types like Floragato due to its dual Dragon/Flying typing, as the battle continued Altaria mostly had the advantage of flight, allowing it to easily dodge several of Floragato's attacks. Grusha then has Altaria unleash several Moonblast attacks which Floragato barely dodges, Liko almost panics but then remembers how Floragato grabbed onto a branch with her vine to slow down her Cetoddle ride. Liko quickly commands Floragato to dodge another Moonblast before wrapping her vine around Altaria's feet to hinder its movements, then jumping up and unleashing a powerful Acrobatics to kick and send Altaria crashing to the ground. Grusha is once again slightly impressed by Liko's tactics and both trainers promptly Terastallize their Pokemon, with Grusha's Altaria becoming an Ice Tera-type.
Dot notes how Altaria's type change into an Ice type is still a threat but it also makes Floragato's attacks deal normal damage which slightly evens the playing field, Grusha however comments how type changes are irrelevant in the face of true power. Both Floragato and Altaria use a Tera boosted Magical Leaf and Ice beam respectively, resulting in a big clash of power. Grusha coldly states he shall show Liko true despair, as Altaria's Ice Beam ultimately overpowers, freezes and defeats Floragato, causing Liko to lose the battle.
Liko apologizes to Floragato for not winning, but Dot and Roy note how Liko could still pass the test despite losing thanks to her great battling skills and tactics shown, as Dot passed Larry's test despite losing. Unfortunately for Liko, Grusha then appears and tells her that she failed the implementation test as she simply lost the battle, commenting how there are no second chances, doing your best is simply not enough and only results matter to him. Liko begrudgingly thanks Grusha for his time, who then leaves with his Cetoddle before Liko breaks down in despair over her loss, with Roy and Dot showing concern for her situation.
