Viridian Forest
Once we enter, we have a choice of paths to follow. To get your first free item in the game, go left, then up when the path does. You'll get a Poke Ball for your efforts. Go back to your starting point, and now follow the right path. The first person you meet won't have anything interesting to say, but the next person certainly will - he's your first non-Rival fight!
