Dratini (Japanese: ミニリュウ Miniryu, German: Dratini, French: Minidraco) is a Dragon-type Pokémon.
Pokédex entries
- Pokémon Emerald
- A Dratini continually molts and sloughs off its old skin. It does so because the life energy within its body steadily builds to reach uncontrollable levels.
Name origin
Dratini's name appears to be a combination of dragon and teeny, meaning small. Despite this, it is fairly large for a Pokémon, being nearly six feet (1.8 meters) in length. Its Japanese name, a combination of miniature and 竜 ryū, dragon, has a similar meaning.
It appears to be based upon sea serpents or lóng, traditional Chinese dragons who bring good luck.
Dratini's proto-type name was "Dragoon," meaning a European military unit, but was probably used as a play on the word "dragon."
