Ash, Morrison and a lot of other trainers are waiting to hear the matchups for the second round of the Hoenn League. Nurse Joy explains that this round will have opponents face off in one-round double battles in order to advance.
The schedule is finally posted and Morrison will be in the day's first battle. He immediately proceeds to the stadium and faces off against Gavin. Morrison sends out Growlithe and Gligar to face his opponent's Marowak and Machamp.
Morrison orders a Flamethrower and a Fury Cutter, but Machamp blocks his attacks with Protect. Growlithe desperately tries to evade Marowak's bone attacks, but suffers a lot of damage. Gligar suffers from a DynamicPunch, but quickly counters with a Metal Claw and Machamp is knocked out!
Now it's a 2-on-1 in Morrison's favor. Growlithe tries to use Flamethrower again, but Marowak jumps up and uses Bone Club. Growlithe is out and the match is down to one-on-one.
Marowak uses an Ice Beam to try and freeze Gligar while launching a Bonemerang. But Gligar counters the Bonemerang with Iron Tail, sending the bone flying back at Marowak and knocking it out.
Later that day, Ash stands at the same battlefield ready for his first match. He sends out Corphish and Torkoal to do battle with a Swalot and Tropius. Swalot quickly proves to be the more difficult opponent, with most attacks simply bouncing off (much like Ash's Muk in its first Indigo League battle).
Tropius begins to charge up a SolarBeam while Torkoal uses Flamethrower followed by Overheat. The combination of force from both attacks results in a double-knockout!
Now Corphish has to face Swalot alone. Things look bad for Ash when Swalot launches a Shock Wave attack. But Ash gets the idea to have Corphish use BubbleBeam inside Swalot's mouth and explode. When the smoke cleared, Swalot is unable to battle and Corphish won. Now, Ash is qualified for the next round.
