Synopsis

Ash and Paul were still in the middle of their full battle, with both having lost one Pokémon and then Pikachu was facing off against Paul's powerful Magmortar. Dawn, who sat on the sidelines with Brock, Reggie and her Piplup (as well as Jessie, James and Meowth in disguise manning the scoreboard), looked up Magmortar in her Pokédex. Dawn wondered why Paul didn't counter with a ground-type, but Brock and Reggie suggested that Paul thought that Ash might have countered with Buizel.

Ash started things off and commanded Pikachu to use Quick Attack, which successfully connected and knocked Magmortar sideways. However, once Pikachu landed it was immediately surrounded by fire. Dawn couldn't understand how Pikachu was hurt when Magmortar didn't attack, and Brock explained that Magmortar has an ability called Flame Body, which can burn an opponent if it makes physical contact, and that was exactly what's happened to Pikachu. Ash asked Pikachu if it wanted to continue and Pikachu, desperate to help defeat Paul, agreed. Ash thanked Pikachu and commanded a Thunderbolt, and Paul responded by ordering a Flamethrower. Magmortar fired the Flamethrower from its massive bazooka-like arms and it connected with Thunderbolt, causing a massive explosion. Ash then ordered Pikachu to try Volt Tackle, and Pikachu headed straight towards Magmortar. Paul commanded Magmortar to use Rock Tomb, and Magmortar started to fire purple energy which turned into rocks when they hit the ground. Pikachu, forced to run straight due to the Volt Tackle, smashed head-first into the rocks which caused Volt Tackle to fail and Pikachu was thrown back where it immediately felt the effects of its burn again. Paul then commanded Magmortar to use Smog and Magmortar released a poisonous cloud towards Pikachu. Ash commanded Pikachu to use the Counter Shield technique which they developed for the Gym Battle against Fantina and Pikachu rolled on its back while releasing electricity, which successfully countered the Smog. Reggie was impressed by the move, and Brock explained that Ash developed it as a means to both attack and defend at the same time. Pikachu was then hurt by its burn again, and Paul ordered Magmortar to use Flamethrower. Ash told Pikachu to jump and use Iron Tail. Pikachu jumped out of the way of the Flamethrower and successfully hit Magmortar across the head with Iron Tail but was then once again hurt by the burn. Ash decided to recall Pikachu for some rest.

Ash decided to use type-advantage against Magmortar, and sent out Buizel and ordered an Aqua Jet. The attack hit dead-on, sending Magmortar reeling back. Ash then followed the successful move up with Water Pulse, however Paul ordered another Rock Tomb, and Magmortar createed a wall of rocks which stopped the Water Pulse in its tracks. Ash was ready for this and ordered Aqua Jet, and Buizel smashed through the rocks only to find Magmortar gone. Ash told Buizel that Magmortar was in the air, and Buizel looked up to see Magmortar release another Smog, which hit Buizel and poisoned him, which sent him reeling in pain. Magmortar landed and Paul recalled it and sent out Ursaring. Ash told Buizel to use Water Gun however Paul ordered a Hammer Arm which successfully countered the attack. Paul then ordered Bulk Up which increased Ursaring's strength. Ash told Buizel to use Aqua Jet. Paul told Ursaring to use Slash, and Ursaring, after standing up to Aqua Jet, hit Buizel with its sharp claws. Ursaring was then told to use Focus Blast, and Ash responded by having Buizel use Counter Shield which caused the Focus Blast to backfire onto Ursaring. Ash then ordered a SonicBoom, and Paul told Ursaring to use Hammer Arm. Ursaring ran through the SonicBoom and landed a direct hit on Buizel, smashing him to the ground. Ash was ready to recall Buizel however the Pokémon, who wanted to win against Ursaring asked to continue and Ash agreed. He told Buizel to use Aqua Jet. That turned out to be a mistake as Ursaring was told to use another Focus Blast and that time it hit dead-on, knocking Buizel out of the battle. Ash was down two Pokémon. Dawn felt very sorry for Buizel, while Brock and Reggie discussed Ash's mistake in keeping Buizel in the battle so long.

Ash then sent out Staraptor, and told it to use Aerial Ace. Paul ordered another Hammer Arm, but Staraptor was able to dodge it and scored a clean hit with Aerial Ace. Paul ordered Focus Blast, which hit Staraptor in mid-air however it is still able to battle. Ash told Staraptor to use Close Combat, but Ursaring was told to use Slash which hit Staraptor before it could get to Ursaring with Close Combat. Paul then had Ursaring finish Staraptor off with Hammer Arm and Staraptor was taken out of the match and Ash thanked it for a good battle.

Paul recalled Ursaring and sent out his Electabuzz, and Ash sent out Chimchar. Ash told Chimchar to use Flamethrower, however Electabuzz was told to use Protect which shielded Electabuzz from the Flamethrower. Paul then had Electabuzz put up a Light Screen and then immediately returned it to its Poké Ball. While Jessie, James and Meowth complained about the constant switching of Pokémon which meant more work for them, Brock and Reggie noted that the Light Screen will help protect any Pokémon Paul used for a while. Paul then sent out Torterra, which confused Ash as Torterra, as a partial Grass-type, has a disadvantage to Chimchar. Ash told Chimchar to use Flame Wheel, however Torterra was ordered to use Stone Edge. Chimchar immediately dodged the Stone Edge by changing the direction of the Flame Wheel, but Torterra had the pointed stones follow. Chimchar was unable to outrun the stones and suffered a hit. Ash had Chimchar use Flamethrower which hit successfully however the Light Screen protected Torterra and therefore the Flamethrower had no impact. Realizing that Chimchar wasn't going to beat Torterra like this he recalled it, making Jessie complain loudly about the extra work that Ash was giving them by switching Pokémon. Ash sent out Gliscor against Torterra again and ordered X-Scissor, while Torterra was told to use Frenzy Plant. That time, Frenzy Plant scored a hard hit and Gliscor was knocked out instantly. Ash returned Gliscor to its Poké Ball, realizing that he was then in serious trouble as he has only two Pokémon that are already weakened left in the battle while Paul still has five. Pikachu requested to go up against Torterra, and after making sure it was okay to battle, sent it in only for Paul to immediately return Torterra.

Paul then sent out Ursaring again, and Ash was then very unsure of what to do as he knew that Ursaring was very powerful having already taken out two of his Pokémon. Pikachu had to remind Ash that he had the first move, and Ash ordered Quick Attack while Paul ordered yet another Hammer Arm. Pikachu hit with Quick Attack however Ursaring's Hammer Arm knocked the wind out of Pikachu and sent it flying back however it recovered and Ash ordered Pikachu to use Iron Tail. Paul ordered Ursaring to counter, however Ursaring had been paralyzed by Pikachu's Static and Iron Tail scored a clean hit although Pikachu still took damage from the burn it received from Magmorter earlier. Just then, Ursaring's eyes glowed red and Paul was very pleased about this development while Reggie noted that Ursaring's Guts ability has been activated by its paralysis. Pikachu looked up to see Ursaring glowing red and screaming with rage, having suddenly just gained a lot of power. Paul commanded Hammer Arm, while Ash told Pikachu to counter which it did by letting out a massive Thunderbolt, however it didn't stop Ursaring and the Hibernation Pokémon grabbed Pikachu with Hammer Arm and sent it flying into Lake Acuity where after disappearing under the water it let out a final burst of electricity. Ash ran into the lake looking for his partner, while Reggie explained that Guts worked by using the fact Ursaring was suffering from a status condition to give it more power. Dawn and Piplup were very worried about Pikachu, and even Paul cast a glance towards the lake where Ash was looking. Pikachu emerged from the water, seemingly okay, however it then quickly fainted, not only exhausted but injured from Ursaring's attacks. Ash carried Pikachu to the sidelines and promised to get it to a Pokémon Center after the battle. Ash knew that as he only has Chimchar left while Paul still has five Pokémon able to battle he will now almost certainly lose the match however he is still determined to continue, concerning Pikachu. Ash sent out Chimchar, while Paul left Ursaring in. Ash told Chimchar to use Flame Wheel, but Ursaring knocked it back with Slash. Ash then told Chimchar to use Flamethrower which scored a direct hit, and Ash then had Chimchar use Dig. Ursaring was told to use Hammer Arm however Chimchar emergeed from Dig before Ursaring could pull off the attack and caused even more damage to Ursaring. Chimchar was then told to use Flamethrower which hit Ursaring, sending it flying back, which finally knocked it out. Ash congratulated Chimchar on doing a great job which made the Chimp Pokémon dance with joy. Jessie, James and Meowth cried with joy at seeing Chimchar do so well.

Ash approached Chimchar and heaped it with well-earned praise and asked if it is ok to continue. Chimchar nodded its head in agreement and then started to glow... as Chimchar has started to evolve! Everyone watched in amazement as Chimchar went through the transformation and evolved into Monferno. Ash was overjoyed over having a new Pokémon, and Dawn looked up Monferno in the Pokédex. Reggie noted how well Ash has raised Chimchar, a Pokémon that Paul once considered to be worthless, and then, as an evolved Monferno had a lot more techniques at its disposal. Monferno demonstrated this by swinging its fists quickly and effortlessly which caused them to glow. Monferno then swung at the ground which sent a gust of wind at Paul, who stood in his spot and still didn't recognize Monferno as the powerful fighter it was. Ash realized that as well as evolving Monferno has also learned Mach Punch, which Monferno confirmed by somersaulting on the spot.

Paul sent out Electabuzz, which was initially surprised to see Chimchar has evolved but was still ready to battle its former teammate, a sentiment Monferno agreed with. Reggie noted the two are now on equal terms, and Ash commanded Monferno to use Mach Punch. Monferno sped towards Electabuzz and hit it with Mach Punch square in the chest, sending an astounded Electabuzz flying back and smashed into a rock. Paul told Electabuzz to use Thunder, which hit Monferno and paralyzed it. Ash responded to this by having Monferno use Flame Wheel, however Paul had Electabuzz use Protect and Monferno was sent flying into the air. Monferno was told to try Flamethrower and Electabuzz was told to dodge and use ThunderPunch. Monferno was able to dodge it in mid-air, and Ash told it to use Dig. Monferno tunneled underground, and when Electabuzz landed, it suffered a punch in the face. Ash commanded another Flame Wheel, and Electabuzz was told to respond with Thunder which headed straight towards Monferno but Ash had Monferno use Counter Shield and as a result the Thunder was deflected and Flame Wheel scored a direct hit. Reggie was impressed by how Ash was using the momentum to turn the battle around. Another Mach Punch was commanded, but this time Monferno was hit by Electabuzz's Thunder, sending it back towards Ash and was forced to its knees both through the damage and paralysis. Ash told Monferno to use Flamethrower, however it felt the paralysis again and can't launch the attack. Ash was furious that Monferno can't launch the attack, and everyone noted that Ash was acting a lot more like Paul. Just then, Monferno's tail flame started to burn more fiercely. Dawn asked if Monferno has activated Blaze, however Brock and Reggie explained that the increase in Monferno's flame wasn't Blaze but was actually due to its determination to defeat Electabuzz. Ash was delighted that Monferno was so focused on winning and told it to use Mach Punch while Paul commanded his Electabuzz to use ThunderPunch. The two Pokémon headed towards each other, full of fury and both attacks connect at the same time, which caused a massive explosion in the middle of the battlefield. When the smoke cleared, Monferno and Electabuzz were staring each other down and while Electabuzz was very weak, Monferno has taken far more damage and collapsed to the ground, badly injured, to Ash's horror. Osabaki ruled Monferno as being unable to battle, which meant Paul had won the match and Ash has suffered his worst defeat ever.

The sun started to set on Lake Acuity, as Paul returnd Electabuzz to its Poké Ball and Ash cradled Monferno in his arms, telling it that it did a great job. Reggie congratulated Paul on his win, and Paul bid farewell to Reggie and Osabaki and left without even acknowledging Ash and his friends. Ash was left holding his badly injured Monferno, with his future in the Sinnoh League and as a Pokémon Trainer left in serious doubt...
