Welcome

Welcome to Bulbapedia, Totallynotnova!

As a new user, you may wish to learn a few things that will be useful in your editing:

  • For a basic overview of wiki code, see this page.
  • The manual of style is very important. Make sure to read it. It outlines all official policies of Bulbapedia.
  • The word Pokémon is spelled with a capital P and an accented é. The P, of course, is accessed easily by holding Shift and pressing the P key, while the é can be accessed using Alt + 130 or Alt + 0233 on a Windows computer, and Option + e, then e again on a Mac. Otherwise, you can click it in the character palette below the editbox.
  • The word Poké Ball is spelled as two words. The "Poké" part is identical to the four beginning letters in "Pokémon"; "Ball" is spelled with a captial B (which is, again, accessed by holding Shift and pressing the B key). The spelling "Pokéball" arises frequently, but is incorrect.
  • The word "you" and all forms of it should not be used on encyclopedic pages unless it is a quote from Pokémon media. Bulbapedia is an encyclopedia, not a walkthrough.
  • On talk pages, please sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
  • The use of link templates is official policy. For an explanation on their use, see the page on shortlinks.
  • If you happen to spot a vandal in the recent changes that has not been dealt with, please see this page for how to deal with it.
  • A list of pages that are linked to, but have not been created, can be found at this page. A list of short articles that may require more information can be found here, while a list of articles that need improvement can be found here.
  • For a future capture, release, trade, or evolution of a Pokémon belonging to a main character of the anime, please do not create or move the page to reflect your suspicions, even if they are shared by many others. Policy here is to wait until the episode in which the event happens takes place is aired, unless there is substantial evidence for the suspicion (such as Brock's Happiny being held in his arms).
  • If you want to make a page about a character you made up, please create it at User:Totallynotnova/(name), not merely (name). Bulbapedia's main namespace is reserved for actual, official Pokémon, items, characters, and locations. Also, please try to make sure that subpages are not categorized by templates used within.
  • A list of the admins that you can contact in case of a problem, can be found here.

Thank you, and have a good time editing here! Tina δ 23:53, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Yo. I'm here to tell you that your signature needs to conform to Bulbapedia's new Signature policy. By our standard, your signature needs to reflect your username. Please change it to meet this standard. --ニョロトノ666 22:29, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Userspace Edits

You're right -- just 3 per day. Thanks for following the rule! ^_^ Porygon-Z 00:11, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

Userspace edits

Hello. It seems that you have made 3 edits to your userpage today. In case you didn't know, Bulbapedia has a userspace policy that states that users are only allowed 3 edits to their userpage per day. Since you have reached that limit for today, please wait until tomorrow to make any more edits to your userpage. As a recommendation, you can also use the Preview button to allow you to see your page's progress without making too many edits. Thank you, --Coolピカチュウ! 01:09, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

So what template did you subst for that? Totallynotnova 05:12, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
I think Pre-userspace warning.--Coolピカチュウ! 05:23, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Welcome to Bulbapedia, Totallynotnova!

Here are a few links to help you get started:

The Manual of Style, or MoS, outlines the format of all pages on Bulbapedia.

All of our administrators are here to help! Talk to them if you have any questions or problems with Bulbapedia.

On talk pages, please sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~), or by using the "Your signature with a timestamp" (button_sig.png) button at the top of the edit window.

The Userspace Policy says that you should keep userspace edits (edits to User:Totallynotnova) to a minimum, and outlines a few other guidelines for your userspace.

For a complete list of policies and editing advice, please see the Welcome Portal.
Thank you, and have a good time editing here!

That's a pretty bad welcome message Geo. Try taking out the tiny bulbapedia image in the top left corner, but replace it with a faded image in the background that goes "<icon> Bulbapedia" across and behind the top bar. And you could replace that silly gradient with a small image that transitions smoother from green to white. But you have to design it on acidtest-verified browsers. That way when people get messages on IE and complain about how the gradient looks bad, you can tell them that IE is a shitty browser. And a vertical divider wouldn't hurt; you've already got a horizontal one which is unnecessary. Try moving the subtitles (list of admins, signatures, etc.) about five pixels to the right to make it not too claustrophobic. Make the "Welcome to Bulbapedia" title bar bigger, or else thin the top bar vertically, or a little bit of both, because it looks clumsy as it is. And the penultimate bar ("complete list of policies") also looks clumsy because it's only one line with one object in it, and it's directly above the signature bar, with a tiny white space that's too thin to be an efficient divider and too thick to not look clumsy. Do something about it; just don't leave it as it is. And I suggest you link the "edits to User:Username" part because else wikivirgins will have no idea what you're talking about. Better yet, just tell them what their userpage is, link them to it, and tell them not to edit it too much. They can learn what a userspace is later - no need to confuse them from the get-go. And please remove the brackets around the example four tildes. I've seen far far far too many new users enclose their signature in brackets because they think you need the brackets as part of the signature. It's not like they will confuse the four tildes for random lines, and if they do, they're too dumb to be of any benefit to this wiki anyway.
Hm, I think that's about it. Subst'ing all that complicated code onto a noob's talkpage is sure to confuse the hell out of them when they try to reply or edit. But of course you can't use the template directly due to server load. I do wonder if there's a way around both of those, though.

EDIT: Oh, and the green is to lime-y and bright. Try to make it look a bit more like the shade of green in the wiki-wide announcement bar at the top (about telling 14-year olds about a manual of style - wait, they are fourteen now right? I've lost count.) Anyways, I'd like to smack whoever chose that colour. And whoever designed the title bar. And some admin named Jioruji Derako.>.chat^ for giving the welcome message to me. What do I look like to you? A noob? psht. And what kinda name is that. Totallynotnova 00:07, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
Oh, and those were not supposed to be minor edits! The whole world must know! Totallynotnova 00:09, 14 October 2009 (UTC)
