Release information

Prototype Pokémon Leagues were given the Trainer Deck A, which included this card, before the Base Set's official release. This print has a red border and "Trainer Deck A" printed on the back. This card was included in the Base Set with artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi, first released in the Japanese Expansion Pack. It was reprinted in the Japanese Hanada, Kuchiba, Tamamushi, and Yamabuki City Gym Theme Decks, and the Totodile Half Deck of the Japanese Intro Pack Neo. Outside Japan, it was reprinted in Base Set 2.

This card was later reprinted in the Undaunted expansion with new artwork by Ryo Ueda, first released in the Japanese Reviving Legends expansion.

With the release of the Black and White expansion, this card received an erratum to change "by an opponent's attack" to "by attacks".

Trivia

Origin

Defender's Japanese name is that of the X Defense, an item in the Pokémon games. The Japanese name of the item was either used for the English card by mistake, or was intentionally used as "Defender" is inscribed on the side of the object in the card's original artwork.
