(Japanese: 大晦日だよ!ポケットモンスターアンコール It's New Year's Eve! Pocket Monsters Encore) is an hour-long clip show originally intended to air in Japan on December 31, 1997. This would have been between Holiday Hi-Jynx and Snow Way Out!.
It was canceled entirely in the wake of the EP038 incident and subsequent rescheduling of other anime episodes.
It is confirmed in the list of the episodes' production numbers given in the booklet with the first movie Laserdisc release, as well as episode numbers visible on scripts, that it was not initially intended to be a regular episode. Also unlike regular episodes, it was planned to air in a different time-slot than usual, would have been an hour long, and used kanji in the title.
Like other episodes given the 'Encore' title, it would not have had any new footage, but instead be a repeat of previous footage. It was also subsequently skipped in all broadcasts in other languages, and has never aired. No trailer for this episode has ever been seen, nor is any further information known apart from its Japanese title.
Trivia
- A similarly titled but different special, It's the New Year! Pocket Monsters Special!, aired on January 1, 1999. That special was two hours long (whereas this special would have only been one hour long) and recapped the events of the anime until EP077.
- It is entirely possible that material from this unaired special was imported into the 1999 New Year's special.
- It has been speculated that footage from EP038 would have been in the special.
