The Pokémon Ultimate Handbook by Cris Silvestri (ISBN 978-0545078863) is an edition of The Official Pokémon Handbook series that was published on October 1, 2008. It served as a paper form of the National Pokédex for all 491 Pokémon known at the time in alphabetical order, excluding Shaymin and Arceus. The book's final pages include a special feature of Darkrai and a section on all legendary Pokémon but Shaymin and Arceus.
An Updated Edition of the book was released in 2009 by the same author. The updated version fixes some of the errors that are present in the first edition, and it also includes entries for Arceus, as well as Shaymin's Land and Sky Formes.
Entries
The entries for each Pokémon are in an easy-to-read page setup. Each Pokémon has either an entire page to itself, or shares a page with one of its evolutions, or another Pokémon.
Name
Each entry is topped with a large, slab-shaped bar of a random color. Unlike its predecessors, these bars have both the Pokémon's name and species name inside, and the color does not reference its type.
Stats
Each Pokémon has the following stats below its name:
- Pronunciation
- Possible Moves (moves the Pokémon will already know and learn along the way)
- Type
- Height and weight
- Region it resides in (either Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh)
Moves introduced in Platinum are not included.
Image and other information
Each Pokémon has an anime-style picture on its page, with "flavor text" under their name. Pages for legendary Pokémon have stars on their page and their bar will be white with a glowing stroke around it.
Evolution chain
At the very bottom of a Pokémon's entry is a diagram of its evolutionary family. Pokémon that do not evolve do not have an evolution chain.
Errors
The errors are often misspellings the species names.
- Abra and its evolutions are mistakenly listed as the "Psychic Pokémon" instead of the Psi Pokémon.
- Azelf is listed as the "Stone Pokémon" instead of the Willpower Pokémon.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Budew's page wrongly states that it is able to learn Bullet Seed by level up.
- Celebi's typing is listed as Grass/Psychic instead of Psychic/Grass.
- Cherrim is listed as the "Cherry Blossom Pokémon" when its simply the Blossom Pokémon.
- Cresselia is listed as the "Crescent Moon Pokémon" instead of the Lunar Pokémon.
- Croagunk is called the "Poison Pokémon" instead of the Toxic Mouth Pokémon. Its evolution, however, has the correct name.
- Delibird accidentally has a yellow glow on its namebox which only the Legendary Pokémon have on their nameboxes.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Dialga is called the "Time Pokémon" instead of the Temporal Pokémon.
- Donphan is listed as the "Armor Bird Pokémon" when its simply the Armor Pokémon.
- On Duskull's page, a picture of its eye is under the picture. The same problem occurs in all of its evolutionary chains.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Froslass's page says it evolves from Glalie. This is not true, as Froslass evolves from a female Snorunt exposed to a Dawn Stone.
- Golem is listed as the "Rock Pokémon," like its pre-evolved forms; however, it is known as the Megaton Pokémon.
- Ledyba and Ledian are listed as the "Five Start Pokémon" instead of the Five Star Pokémon.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Luxio's moveset has been replaced with Roserade's.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Luxray's moveset has been replaced with that of Cranidos and Rampardos.
- Palkia is called the "Space Pokémon" instead of than the Spatial Pokémon.
- Poliwrath's page leaves out Politoed, and Politoed's page leaves out Poliwrath.
- These are both corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Porygon has Porygon2's picture and vice versa.
- Rampardos's moveset is missing Endeavor.
- Rotom is listed as a Legendary Pokémon, but isn't in the legendary line-up.
- This is corrected in the Updated Edition.
- Scizor is called the "Scissors Pokémon" instead of the Pincer Pokémon. It has also been called this in the anime at one point.
- In the Updated Edition, Shaymin's Sky Forme's moveset is missing Air Slash.
- Skorupi's species name, the Scorpion Pokémon, is misspelled "Scorpian."
- Squirtle is called the "Water Pokémon" instead of the Tiny Turtle Pokémon.
- Staryu is called the "Star Fish Pokémon" instead of the Star Shape Pokémon.
- The lineart of Suicune on its entry page and in the legendary line-up are misprinted.
- Surskit is called the "Pound Skater Pokémon" instead of the Pond Skater Pokémon.
- Torkoal is called the "Coral Pokémon" instead of the Coal Pokémon.
- Torterra's picture on its own page is different from the one in Grotle's evolution chain.
- In Umbreon's description, Eevee is misspelled "Evee."
- Zangoose's page misspells "cat" as "car."
- Zigzagoon's species name, the TinyRaccoon Pokémon, is misspelled "tynyracoon."
- Sky Attack is mostly referred to as "Sky Power."
- Similarly, Tri Attack is incorrectly called "Tri Power."
- There are several minor move spelling errors, such as: Infernape's page misspells Mach Punch as "Mash Punch," Prinplup's page misspells Metal Claw as "Metal Chew," and Turtwig's page misspells Synthesis as "Syntesis."
- Piplup and Prinplup are shown to be able to learn Bite, presumably mistaken for Bide. The same error can be seen on Kricketot and Kricketune's page.
