The guardian deities or the Tapus are a group Pokémon that are the guardians of each of Alola's islands. They consist of Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu and Tapu Fini.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc
Tapu Koko first appears when Sun notices something in the sky. Moon turns around to find the guardian deity of Melemele Island, Tapu Koko, has appeared before them. The Land Spirit Pokémon proceeds to attack the two, forcing Sun to battle it. After a short battle, Tapu Koko escapes and leaves behind a Sparkling Stone. It is later mentioned during a meeting of the Island Kahunas, where Hala, Kahuna of Melemele Island, reports that it has recently appeared to large groups of people. He notes that the Tapus remain deep within their respective ruins rarely revealing themselves to humans, yet have recently appeared in public places filled with people. Hala comes to the conclusion that they have been angered.
The next day at Mahalo Trail, using its powers, Nebby causes a large explosion that breaks the bridge it and Moon were standing on, leaving both to fall into the water below. Moon and Nebby are saved by Tapu Koko, who flies down and catches the two and brings them back to safety and quickly leaves again.

Tapu Lele was later seen in person flying above Lush Jungle, where an Ultra Wormhole appeared with a mysterious creature emerging from it, attacking it. After it escaped, Tapu Lele gave a scowl and flew off to somewhere else. Later it is kidnapped by Gladion, having retracted into its shell to recuperate after the attack from the mysterious creature.
