Pokémon de English (Japanese: ポケモンdeイングリッシュ Pokémon de English) was a segment at the end of Pocket Monsters Encore used to teach Japanese children simple English words and phrases. All of the segments where later compiled into three volumes and later released.

Pokémon de English uses a mixture of unedited Japanese and painted-over English video. New English lines were also recorded for this release by the original voice actors from both Japan and the United States. Pokémon de English was later released as rental only VHS and DVDs in 2002 and 2007, respectively, including English audio, as well as closed captioning in both English and Japanese.

The blurb on the back of the DVD releases read:

"The contents of this DVD are edited from the US release and was originally broadcast in Japan. Now you can enjoy the native speed and clarity by watching Pokémon spoken in English by native English speakers!"

Volumes

Pokémon de English! Greetings

Japanese: ポケモン de イングリッシュ! あいさつ編 (Pokémon de English! Aisatsu Hen)

Contents of Volume 01:

Pokémon de English! Numbers and Colors

Japanese: ポケモン de イングリッシュ! かず・いろ編 (Pokémon de English! Kazu - Iro Hen)

Contents of Volume 02:

Pokémon de English! Food and Vehicles

Japanese: ポケモン de イングリッシュ! のりもの・たべもの編 (Pokémon de English! Norimono - Tabemono Hen)

Trivia

  • Pokémon - I Choose You! is included, uncensored, with Misty slapping Ash- though all the paint edits remain.
  • Pokémon de English uses new voice recordings of the original cast from Japan and the US.
  • The subtitles in some segments replace slang and abbreviated words with their proper formal wording to help with clarity.
  • Pokémon de English uses 'Who's That Pokémon' segments from the Johto League Champions series where Ad breaks would be instead of the usual 'Dare da?' segments.
  • During the segment that featured Forest Grumps in Volume 02, originally; Misty, James & Meowth were playing じゃんけん (Jan-Ken-Pon) the Japanese version of Rock, Paper, Scissors - However, this was changed to 'Odd Finger' by the 4Kids Localization Team and kept that way for this release, which ironically isn't a form of counting in it's original form.
  • Though おにぎり (Onigiri) are correctly called Rice Balls in one segment of Volume 03, later on in the following segment, they are referred to as Popcorn Balls.
  • Although during Volume 01, Pokémon - I Choose You! was completely uncensored, during Volume 03, the segment that includes Misty slapping Ash is removed making it identical to the original US airing edits.
  • Though the same as their original releases, Pokémon Karaokémon uses a chopped down, off beat version of All We Wanna Do which also contains incorrect lyrics on screen - while Two Perfect Girls uses an alternatively recorded version that pre-dates and differs from the version on the album Totally Pokémon.

Errors

  • In the credits, Rachael Lillis is incorrectly credited as 'Rachael Lillie'.
  • Various Pokémon (such as Ekans & Venusaur) in the 'ABC Pokémon Rap' are pronounced incorrectly.
  • Pallet Town is incorrectly spelt as 'Palette Town' in the English subtitles throughout the DVD release.
