Anticipation (Japanese: きけんよち Danger Premonition) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV.
Effect
In battle
Generation IV
When a Pokémon with Anticipation enters the battle or a Pokémon gains the Ability Anticipation, it causes the Pokémon to "shudder" if any opponent has a damaging move that is super effective against the Pokémon with Anticipation, a one-hit knockout move, or Selfdestruct or Explosion.
Hidden Power, Judgment, Weather Ball, and Natural Gift are treated as Normal-type moves. Counter, Metal Burst, and Mirror Coat do not trigger Anticipation.
Generation V
The moves Selfdestruct and Explosion are now treated like all other Normal-type moves, and thus no longer trigger Anticipation.
Counter, Metal Burst, and Mirror Coat are counted as attacking moves of their types, so can trigger Anticipation. Techno Blast is treated as a Normal-type move.
Generation VI onward
Hidden Power is now treated as its effective type rather than Normal-type. Revelation Dance and Multi-Attack are treated as Normal-type moves.
Normal-type moves (including Self-Destruct and Explosion) can trigger Anticipation in Inverse Battles, if the Pokémon is weak to Normal-type moves.
Anticipation ignores strong winds.
Outside of battle
Anticipation has no effect outside of battle.
Pokémon with Anticipation
- In Generation V, Ferrothorn has no Hidden Ability.
In other games
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
In Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky, and the Mystery Dungeon (WiiWare) games, when a Pokémon with Anticipation attacks an opponent with a regular attack it can detects if the opponent has any super-effective moves.
Since Gates to Infinity, Anticipation increases the chance of evading super-effective moves and one-hit knockout moves.
