Release information
This card was first released in each of the Japanese V Starter Sets. The English print was first released in the Sword & Shield expansion as a Holofoil, along with Full Art and Secret Rainbow Rare prints. The Regular print features artwork by Yusuke Ohmura, while the Full Art and Secret prints feature artwork by kirisAki. All three Sword & Shield prints originate from the Japanese Sword expansion. Non Holofoil versions of the Regular print were included in the Sword & Shield and Rebel Clash Build & Battle Boxes as well as every Theme Deck of the Sword & Shield Series.
In Japan, the Regular print was reprinted as a Non Holofoil in the Sword & Shield Premium Trainer Box, in the Charizard & Grimmsnarl VMAX Starter Sets, and in each of the V Starter Decks. A S-P Promotional print was also awarded to players who had accumulated at least one Championship Point over the course of the 2019-2020 season, which was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible events included the Tokyo and Aichi 2020 Champion's League tournaments plus City Leagues, Trainer's Leagues, and Station Leagues that were completed before restrictions were introduced. Copies of this print began to be distributed in mid-September 2020. The Regular print was reprinted as a Holofoil in the Champion's Path expansion and in the Japanese Shiny Star V subset, and again as a Non Holofoil in the Japanese Single Strike & Rapid Strike Premium Trainer Boxes, Sword & Shield Family Pokémon Card Game set, and Zacian & Zamazenta vs Eternatus Special Deck Set. A new print with artwork by Hideki Ishikawa featuring Professor Juniper was included in the Shining Fates expansion, first released in the Japanese Venusaur & Blastoise VMAX Starter Sets. This print also replaced the Regular Professor Magnolia print in a second version of the Charizard VMAX Starter Set from the VMAX Battle Triple Starter Set. Holofoil versions of this Professor Juniper print were also included in the V Battle Deck—Victini vs Gardevoir and in both of the Japanese High-Class Decks.
Another new print with artwork by Yusuke Kozaki featuring Professor Willow was released in the summer of 2021 around the world as part of a promotion to celebrate Pokémon GO's fifth anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the Trading Card Game, and as the first collaboration between Pokémon GO and the TCG. Each individual card had a special promotional code printed below its effect that allowed players to participate in Special Research in Pokémon GO.[1][2]
Regular and Full Art prints depicting Professor Oak were included in the special Celebrations expansion. The Regular print features artwork by KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA, while the Full Art print features artwork by Ken Sugimori. These cards were later released as part of the Japanese 25th Anniversary Collection. A Full Art print illustrated by Yuu Nishida featuring Professor Juniper was released as part of the Japanese VMAX Climax subset. Another print featuring Professor Rowan with artwork by Sanosuke Sakuma was included in the Japanese Start Deck 100 and could be obtained in Non Holofoil and Mirror Holofoil versions. Holofoil and Non Holofoil Professor Rowan prints were also released in the Japanese Star Birth expansion and VSTAR Premium Trainer Box, respectively. The Holofoil print was later included in the Brilliant Stars expansion. In Japan, the Professor Rowan print was reprinted in both VSTAR Starter Sets and again as a Mirror Holofoil in the Start Deck 100 CoroCoro Comic Version.

Trivia
- This card's effect is identical to Professor Juniper and Professor Sycamore. As such, it was ruled that a deck may only contain one of the three.
- Professor's Research was specifically named to prevent the need for future rulings such as this for subsequent prints featuring different Professors. The Professor's names are printed in the upper right corner.
Origin
The Sword & Shield prints feature Professor Magnolia, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Galar region; the Shining Fates and VMAX Climax prints feature Professor Juniper, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Unova region; the SWSH Black Star Promo print features Professor Willow, the Pokémon Professor in Pokémon GO; the Celebrations prints feature Professor Oak, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Kanto region; and the Brilliant Stars print features Professor Rowan, the resident Pokémon Professor of the Sinnoh region. The exterior of Professor Magnolia's laboratory is featured in the Sword & Shield Regular print's illustration, while the interior is featured in the Full Art print's illustration. The interior of Professor Juniper's laboratory is featured in the Shining Fates print's illustration. Meltan is featured in the illustration of the SWSH Black Star Promo print, which was first discovered in Pokémon GO.
