The term grounded is used to describe a Pokémon that can be affected by damaging Ground-type moves and several other associated effects.

Ungrounded Pokémon

Several characteristics may make a Pokémon ungrounded.

A Pokémon is ungrounded if any of the following apply (and there is no effect that makes it grounded).

Some of these characteristics can be negated by certain moves or Abilities, such as Gastro Acid or Klutz. Additionally, during the execution of a move that ignores Abilities or an Ability that ignores other Abilities, Levitate is ignored, so Pokémon that are only ungrounded due to it are treated as if they were grounded.

Pokémon that are in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move (including the target of Sky Drop) are also unaffected by effects that only work against grounded Pokémon. However, this status does not make them immune to Ground-type moves per se—they can still be affected by Ground-type moves if those moves successfully hit them (via the effects of No Guard, Lock-On, or Mind Reader), and a Pokémon using Dig can still be hit by Earthquake, Magnitude and Fissure. Additionally, a Pokémon in a semi-invulnerable turn of a move hit by Smack Down or Thousand Arrows will not gain the smacked down status unless it is also ungrounded (but Pokémon in the semi-invulnerable turn of Fly or Bounce will still be knocked out of the move).

Grounded Pokémon

By default, grounded Pokémon are simply those that are not ungrounded. However, there are also several effects that will negate a Pokémon's ungrounded status, making it grounded.

A Pokémon will be grounded if any of the following apply.

The move Roost removes the user's Flying type for one turn; while it does not directly make the user grounded, if the user is only ungrounded due to being Flying type, it will remain grounded until it regains its Flying type at the end of that turn.

Inverse Battles and the Ring Target can make Flying-type Pokémon able to be affected by damaging Ground-type moves, but they do not cause the Pokémon to become grounded; all other relevant effects still consider the Pokémon to be ungrounded.

Effects of grounded status

Pokémon that are ungrounded are immune to all damaging Ground-type moves, except Thousand Arrows.

Ungrounded Pokémon are also immune to:

If a grounded Poison-type Pokémon is sent out while Toxic Spikes are on its side of the field, Toxic Spikes will be removed.
