Bounce (Japanese: とびはねる Bounce) is a damage-dealing Flying-type move introduced in Generation III. It was TM52 in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Effect

Generation III

The user bounces up high on the first turn, avoiding most moves. On the second turn, the user slams down onto the target, inflicting damage with a 30% chance of paralyzing it.

The user is able to be hit by Gust, Twister, Thunder, and Sky Uppercut during the semi-invulnerable turn of Bounce, and will receive double damage from Gust and Twister. The user may also be hit during the semi-invulnerable turn if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader.

Wild Pokémon can be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Bounce.

Generation IV

A Pokémon in the semi-invulnerable stage of Bounce can also be hit if it is hit with Hurricane, Smack Down, and Thousand Arrows, is attacked by a Pokémon with No Guard, or has No Guard itself. If Smack Down or Thousand Arrows hits, the user of Bounce will be knocked down, canceling the move. If the user is hit by Gust or Twister during the semi-invulnerable turn, the move's power will be doubled rather than the damage dealt (resulting in virtually the same effect).

It cannot be used if Gravity is in effect.

Pokémon can no longer be caught during the semi-invulnerable stage of Bounce.

If a Power Herb is held by the user, Bounce can be executed in one turn.

Generation V onwards

Bounce can hit non-adjacent opponents in Triple Battles. If the user is hit by Gust or Twister during the semi-invulnerable turn, the damage dealt will be doubled rather than the move's power (resulting in virtually the same effect).

Bounce gives the user the bouncing status on the first turn. While the user is in the air, the Pokémon cannot be hit by moves (except moves such as Gust, Thunder, Twister and Sky Uppercut). Projectiles will also pass the user as if their tile was empty. On the second turn, the user attacks the enemy in front, possibly inflicting paralysis. In the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series, the move's damage is doubled at the end of damage calculation.

Due to it being a two-turn move, this move cannot be linked. Bounce cannot be used in a Pokémon Tower in the Adventure Squad series.

The user begins bouncing. After a set time, the user stops bouncing and attacks. Has a chance (30%) of leaving the target paralyzed. No other actions can be taken while bouncing. Most moves used by opponents will not hit the user while it is bouncing. If the user is attacked by a sync move or max move while bouncing, it will stop bouncing. Lance (New Year's 2021) & Gyarados

Notes:

  • Details:
    • While the user is bouncing, the following situations will cancel their use of this move:
      • The user's team is attacked by an opponent's sync move.
      • The user's team performs a unity attack in a co-op battle.
      • The user is attacked by an opponent's max move. (The user's ally being attacked by an opponent's max move does not count.)
    • Even if Bounce is not fully executed, MP will still be deducted from it.
    • Just like in the core series, the full execution of this move is about two-actions long.
    • Only the bouncing half of this move will reduce the user's sync-move countdown by one—not the attacking half.
    • If Bounce's user would take damage from weather or heal from their skill or status change, they only do so after they begin bouncing—not after this move's attack. These triggers happen while the set time of the user's bouncing passes.
      • If the user's bouncing is the last action before their team's sync moves are ready and if any of these triggers happen, the sync moves of the user's allies will only be ready after the trigger(s) end. This sometimes results in a sync move of the user's team only being ready after the user stops bouncing and attacks.
  • Description history:
    • Initial wording: The user begins bouncing. After a set time, the user stops bouncing and attacks. Has a moderate chance of leaving the target paralyzed.
    • Description prior to Version 2.10.0 (from June 28, 2021): The user begins bouncing. After a set time, the user stops bouncing and attacks. Has a moderate chance of leaving the target paralyzed. No other actions can be taken while bouncing. Most moves used by opponents will not hit the user while it is bouncing. If the user is hit by a sync move while bouncing, it will stop bouncing.
    • Description prior to Version 2.11.0 (from July 28, 2021): ...If the user is hit by a sync move while bouncing, it will stop bouncing.
    • Description prior to Version 2.23.5 (from August 8, 2022): ...If the user is hit by a sync move or max move while bouncing, it will stop bouncing.
