Screech (Japanese: いやなおと Unpleasant Tone) is a non-damaging Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It was TM16 in Pokémon Sword and Shield.

Effect

Screech decreases the target's Defense stat by two stat stages.

Screech is a sound-based move.

If powered up by a Normalium Z into Z-Screech, the user's Attack stat rises by one stage. Throat Chop cannot prevent a Pokémon from using Z-Screech.

Generation I-II

Screech cannot affect a Pokémon behind a substitute.

In the Generation I and II core series games, when an in-game opponent outside of the Battle Tower uses Screech, the move has a 25% chance to fail in addition to its normal chance to miss.

Generation III-V

Screech no longer has an additional chance to fail when used by an in-game opponent.

Generation VI onwards

Screech can now hit Pokémon even if they are behind a substitute.

Description

Games Description StadStad2 A move that makes a horrible noise. It sharply reduces the target's Defense. GSC Sharply reduces the foe's Defense. RSE Emits a screech to sharply reduce the foe's Defense. FRLG An ear-splitting screech is emitted to sharply reduce the foe's Defense. ColoXD Screeches to sharply lower the target's Defense. DPPtHGSSPBR An earsplitting screech is emitted to sharply reduce the foe's Defense stat. BWB2W2 An earsplitting screech harshly reduces the target's Defense stat. XYORAS SMUSUMPE SwShBDSPLA SV An earsplitting screech harshly lowers the target's Defense stat.

Screech lowers the target's Defense. In the Rescue Team, and Explorers series, Screech reduces the target's their Defense stat to ¼ of the original value. This reduction is separate from the stat stages and can be applied multiple times, up to 1/128. This move is affected by Magic Coat and the Muzzled status condition. Being a sound-based move, it is blocked by Soundproof.

From Gates to Infinity onwards, Screech instead lowers the target's Defense by two stages.
