Quite an appealing move.

Waterfall (Japanese: たきのぼり Waterfall Climb) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in Generation I.

It is:

Prior to Generation II, it was the signature move of Goldeen and Seaking.

Effect

In battle

Generation I to III

Waterfall does damage and has no secondary effect.

Waterfall can be used as the second move of a Pokémon Contest combination, with the user gaining 2 bonus appeal points if Rain Dance was used in the previous turn.

Generation IV

Waterfall now has a 20% chance of causing the target to flinch.

Generation V onwards

Waterfall is no longer affected by King's Rock.

Outside of battle

Main article: Waterfall (obstacle)

Waterfall is usable outside of battle, allowing the player to climb waterfalls. In several games, this move is needed to travel past certain points where waterfalls block the player's path.

The player is required to be surfing on water and facing a waterfall when using this move. They can either use Waterfall from the party screen or simply press A to interact with the waterfall.

Prior to Generation V, all the waterfalls climbable with this move flowed from north to south (from the top to the bottom of the game screen).

In certain games, using Waterfall outside of battle requires a specific badge; the Volcano BadgeFRLG, Rising BadgeGSCHGSS, Rain BadgeRSEORAS, Beacon BadgeDPPtBDSP, or Iceberg BadgeXY.

Generation I

Waterfall is not a field move in this generation.

Generations II and III

Waterfall is now an HM move which allows the player to climb waterfalls. This move is not required to go down waterfalls.

Generations IV to VI

Waterfall is now required to go down waterfalls.

In Pokémon Platinum, there is a waterfall in the Distortion World that can be climbed without having the move Waterfall or the Beacon Badge. This is likely due to the fact that gravity is not normal in this world; the player appears to be "surfing" on the waterfall's surface.

Generation VII

Waterfall can no longer be used outside of battle.

Generation VIII

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, Waterfall cannot be used outside of battle. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, it can again and functions as it did in Generations IV to VI, aside from being accessed through the Pokétch rather than being taught to a Pokémon.

Generation IX

Waterfall can no longer be used outside of battle.

Trivia

  • The English name "Waterfall" leaves out the part about climbing, as opposed to the Japanese name "たきのぼり" (Waterfall Climb). Some in-game descriptions (starting in the Japanese Pokémon Stadium) further clarify that the user is charging with enough force to climb waterfalls.
    • In the English version of Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, there is no indication that this move involves climbing waterfalls, because these games do not include move descriptions.
    • In the Japanese version of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the act of "charging with enough force to climb waterfalls" is mentioned in the move description. In the English translation, this was shortened to simply "An aquatic charge attack." (leaving out again the part about climbing). However, Clair explains the move after being defeated: "RisingBadge will enable your Pokémon to use the move for climbing waterfalls."
    • In several games, a waterfall appears when this move is used in-battle. This may incorrectly suggest that the user is summoning a waterfall. While this is most notable in the side series games such as the Pokémon Stadium games, Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness, the attack has been correctly depicted by Squirtle in the Super Smash Bros. series.
  • Waterfall was the first move to gain HM status in a generation after it was introduced, doing so in Generation II. Only Rock Smash shares this trait, although it does not remain an HM in all subsequent generations.
  • Waterfall is the only HM move that was never exclusively taught by HM.
  • Waterfall is the only former signature move to later become an HM move.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Wallace gives out HM05 (Waterfall) instead of a TM. This is the only time a Gym Leader gives out an HM instead of a TM.
  • In Generation II only, the surfing Pokémon spins quickly when it is climbing a waterfall.
  • In Generation VI, if the player uses Waterfall to go up or down a waterfall while riding on a Pokémon with a unique Surfing model (like Lapras), the screen will briefly be covered in a splash of water and then show the player at the other end of the waterfall, instead of showing the entire process.
  • In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, on Battle CD 38, Anorith knows Waterfall, although it cannot learn the move.
  • Waterfall is the only Water-type move capable of making the target flinch.
