Vibrava (Japanese: ビブラーバ Vibrava) is a dual-type Ground/Dragon Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It evolves from Trapinch starting at level 35 and evolves into Flygon starting at level 45.

Biology

Vibrava is a dragonfly-like Pokémon. It has a small head with two yellow antennae and green bulging eyes with black oval-shaped pupils. Its mouth has two large white teeth protruding from each side. It has a skinny yellow body, four skinny black legs with slender feet, and four green, rhombus-shaped wings with black edges. There are similarly-colored rhombus shapes at the end of its tail.

Vibrava's wings are not fully developed, so it is unable to fly very far. However, it is able to create vibrations and ultrasonic waves with its wings. Humans get headaches from these waves. After causing the prey to faint, as a saprotroph, it spits stomach acid to melt its prey before consumption. It continues this eating process every day to help its wings grow. Vibrava calls the desert home and is also known to preserve its captured prey in the desert's hot sands.

Evolution

Vibrava evolves from Trapinch and evolves into Flygon.

Vibrava in the anime

Major appearances

Multiple Vibrava made their main series debut in Beg, Burrow and Steal. Dozens of Trapinch were seen evolving into them at an underground lake. Team Rocket attempted to steal the Vibration Pokémon despite the fact the idea Meowth had of using their previous forms as nutcrackers was now foiled.

In Spontaneous Combusken, Brianna used a Vibrava during the Battle Stage of the Chrysanthemum Contest.

In Making Battles in the Sand!, Goh caught a Vibrava when he investigated a sandstorm in Mauville City. It has since made further appearances in Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

In Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, due to Dialga and Palkia's influence, Goh's Flygon devolved into a Vibrava and then into a Trapinch. It was later reverted in the same episode. The same also occurred with Alternate World Goh's Flygon.

Minor appearances

Multiple Vibrava debuted in Jirachi: Wish Maker.

In Hi Ho Silver Wind!, a Coordinator's Vibrava competed in the Hoenn Grand Festival.

Trivia

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Vibrava represents the adult stage of an antlion, though it seems to draw more visual inspiration from mayflies, possibly nodding to the Japanese word for an adult antlion, usuba-kagerou, or "thin-winged mayfly". Combined with an antlion's resemblance to a dragonfly, Vibrava's typing suggests that it may also draw inspiration from sanddragons. Its tendency to create harsh noises with its wings is similar to that of a cicada.

Name origin

Vibrava may be a combination of vibrate (to shake rapidly) and larva. It may also derive from Vibra.
