Make sure that you're well-prepared - it's going to be a while until you can reach medical attention.  It's a good idea to bring something that can dig, a few Escape Ropes, and a couple of Repels.  As exhausting as the tunnel itself is, there are 15 Trainers standing between you and the exit to Lavender Town!  The new species found here include the Fighting Machop, and the Rock/Ground Onix; both are great additions to your ever-growing team.
11 is a grassy path between Vermilion City and 12 to the east. The southeastern end of Diglett's Cave can be found here, and leads back to 2.

* The area near the entrance is pretty linear, so beat the PokéManiac and take the stairs down to B1F.
Treasure Hunting
Visit the gate on the route's east side and speak to the Scientist. He happens to be one of Professor Oak's aides and has been tasked with evaluating your Pokédex progress. If you have caught at least 30 different species, he rewards you with the Itemfinder. Using this machine reveals any items that may be hidden nearby.

* This section has five Trainers (though you only have to battle four). Get some battle experience, and find the next stairway.
Time for a Trade
The boy near Oak's aide wants a Lickitung, and is willing to trade his Dugtrio for one. Dugtrio can be found in the nearby Diglett's Cave. Lickitung cannot be found until much later, in Cerulean Cave.

* Three Trainers here, just loop around to the right to find the stairs.
Diglett's Cave
Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that spans nearly the whole region, linking 11 to the east side of 2. Like the name implies, the only Pokémon that can be found here are Diglett and its evolved form, Dugtrio.

* Another three Trainers line the tunnel here.  The stairs to 1F are located in the northwest corner.

The east side of 2 was initially inaccessible without 01. The northwestern end of Diglett's Cave emerges here.

Finally, fresh air and sunlight!  As grueling as it may have been, all of those battles have left you almost pdollar11,000 richer, and it's not over yet!  If your team is in trouble, you can walk to the right to avoid the four Trainers outside the tunnel (check the lone tree for a Max Ether). If you battle them or not, set your sights on Lavender Town to the south.

Lavender Town
Time for a Trade
Visit the northeast house and speak to the man inside. He is looking to get an Clefairy, and is willing to trade his Mr. Mime to get one. Clefairy are an uncommon sight in Mt. Moon. Mr. Mime is a unique Pokémon that cannot be found anywhere else.

Lavender is a tiny town, but it does have a few notable attractions.  The Poké Mart in the southeast sells some handy new items, like Revives (which restores a fainted Pokémon to 1/2-health) and Great Balls (an upgrade of the Poké Ball).
Let There Be Light
Use Cut and continue south to reach the gate, where another of Oak's aides is waiting for you. As a reward for capturing at least 10 different species, he gives out 05. This move makes it easier to navigate the dark interior of certain underground areas.

The Name of the Game
From here, you may want to revisit Viridian City to get 42 from the man near the pond.

The house just above the town's southern exit is home to the Name Rater, a man who judges your Pokémon's nicknames.  An odd occupation, but his services are free, so you can change nicknames as often as you'd like.
Pewter City
Pewter Museum of Science
On this latest visit to Pewter City, you can use Cut to clear the small tree on the northeast hill to reach the employee-only area of the museum. Speak to the Scientist standing next to the table to receive the Old Amber. There are Scientists elsewhere who have apparently developed a way to regenerate Pokémon from ancient bits of DNA like this.

Abduction
Fork in the Road
The next step is to return to Cerulean City. There are two ways to get back there: either travel east through Mt. Moon again, or hike back through Diglett's Cave and head north from Vermilion City. Once back in Cerulean City, make your way to the east side of town and use Cut to clear the small tree and continue eastward.

Mr. Fuji, head of the Lavender Volunteer Pokémon House, has gone missing.  His disappearance may have some connection to the recent paranormal activity occurring in Pokémon Tower.  There's nothing you can do about it right now, so just keep your eyes open for clues...
Route 9
Pokémon Tower
9 is a rocky, uneven mountain road that links Cerulean City and 10.

Pokémon Tower, where departed Pokémon are laid to rest, appears to be the source of the town's problems.  Having a connection to the spirit world, most wild Pokémon found inside are Ghosts.  Your rival is on the tower's second floor, but you can put that battle off until later by avoiding the tower for now.  Beyond the second floor, you'll start encountering ghosts and possessed Channelers, but without a Silph Scope, you can't climb to the tower's top floor.

Restless Spirits
Most ghosts you'll encounter inside the tower are actually Pokémon in disguise (Gastly, Haunter, and Cubone) that you'll be able to battle or capture once obtaining the Silph Scope. Gastly and Haunter are two of the only three Ghosts in the game (the third being Gengar), so it's worthwhile to track some down later.  There is one restless spirit in the tower, but since you can't do anything but run from it, it's best to ignore it for now.  There are rumors of a Silph Scope prototype in Celadon City, so it's time to head west!

10 connects 9 to Lavender Town in the south. Much of the route is occupied by a river and the grounds of the Kanto Power Plant. Anyone traveling through the area must venture through the dim interior of Rock Tunnel. A remote Pokémon Center near the cave gives Trainers a chance to prepare themselves.

Celadon City lies to the west, but you've got to get past Saffron City first.  You won't be allowed through the guardhouse though, so enter the building to the north and take the Celadon-Lavender Underground that runs west underneath the city.  Remember to use your Itemfinder in the tunnel - you never know what people may have dropped.  You'll emerge on 7.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Yellow.
These pages follow the original Game Boy iteration, not Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 11

Route 11
Diglett's Cave

Route 11 is a grassy path between Vermilion City and Route 12 to the east. The southeastern end of Diglett's Cave can be found here, and leads back to Route 2.

Time for a Trade

The boy near Oak's aide wants a Lickitung, and is willing to trade his Dugtrio for one. Dugtrio can be found in the nearby Diglett's Cave. Lickitung cannot be found until much later, in Cerulean Cave.

Diglett's Cave

Diglett's Cave is a long tunnel that spans nearly the whole region, linking Route 11 to the east side of Route 2. Like the name implies, the only Pokémon that can be found here are Diglett and its evolved form, Dugtrio.

Route 2 (East)

Route 2

The east side of Route 2 was initially inaccessible without HM01 (Cut). The northwestern end of Diglett's Cave emerges here.

Let There Be Light

Use Cut and continue south to reach the gate, where another of Oak's aides is waiting for you. As a reward for capturing at least 10 different species, he gives out HM05 (Flash). This move makes it easier to navigate the dark interior of certain underground areas.

From here, you may want to revisit Viridian City to get TM42 (Dream Eater) from the man near the pond.

Route 9

Route 9

Route 9 is a rocky, uneven mountain road that links Cerulean City and Route 10.

Route 10 (North)

Route 10

Route 10 connects Route 9 to Lavender Town in the south. Much of the route is occupied by a river and the grounds of the Kanto Power Plant. Anyone traveling through the area must venture through the dim interior of Rock Tunnel. A remote Pokémon Center near the cave gives Trainers a chance to prepare themselves.
