It was first mentioned in A Stand-Up Sit-Down!, and officially appeared in Dawn's Early Night, although Together shows Dawn's Piplup and Buneary in a Double Performance. In the Hoenn and Kanto Grand Festivals, the battles are double performances.In the Sinnoh Grand Festival, all rounds of the festival will be double performance, just like the Hearthome Contest hall.

It was announced in DP150 that the Asatsuki Contest would be held under the Double Performance rule.
