Thanks to Altomare Latios for the synopsis.
Mahogany City is just another step away as Ash and the gang gaze upon it from a hill. Just before they go, a familiar voice is heard and the gang soon see an Arcanine. Ash recognizes Gary, and vice versa. Gary stops and Ash catches up, both of them catching up with each other's lives. Ash challenges Gary to a match but Gary politely declines, saying he's training for something else in mind. He takes off and Ash tries to follow but as soon as they see the bottom of the hill they're standing on, they see a bunch of people doing the same thing as Gary.

They later have lunch at a diner, and Ash is still wondering what Gary is doing. Ash wants to compete against Gary again, but doesn't know anything about Gary's new training regimen. An old man seated next to him mentions the Pokemon Ride Race. Ash is definitely interested and asks for more information. The man says his name is Tamazo and he's the one who's a part of the whole thing. He explains that trainers ride with their Pokemon to his house, get a egg as a relay and go back. It's one big event that happens here. Since Ash is pretty late for the contest, he says he can manage registration. Tamazo gives them a ride to his farm, explaining more about the race along the way.

On their way to Mahogany City, Ash, Misty, and Brock run into Gary and his Arcanine practicing for a meet. Ash decides he wants to enter the meet but needs a sleigh, which he receives from a local Pokemon breeder. Team Rocket no sooner gets wind of the meet than do they begin sabotaging it, stealing Gary's Arcanine midway through the race and making off with some Pokemon eggs stored at the local breeding center. After a short battle with Team Rocket, Arcanine is returned to Gary and Ash goes on to win the race, a trophy, and an unexpected gift from the Pokemon breeder.

Once at Tamazo's farm, his wife greets them, asking about Ash and the others. After the introductions, Tamazo's wife explains that they run a Pokemon Breeding center. Primarily, they do egg harvesting and general Pokemon care. They have a pretty impressive collection of eggs on their shevles. Afterwards, Tamazo gives Ash his equipment: A leash and a skateboard. Ash rides around on the skateboard for a while, Tamazo asking if this is his first time. Ash says he used to ride a wooden board down hills back in Pallet. He goes down another hill but ends up hitting a rock; however, something stops him from going down further after impact. Ash looks up and sees it's Gary and his Arcanine. Gary wonders what Ash is doing and sees the skateboard, Gary getting the idea. Now Gary gets all competitive.
Plot
Continuing through a winding valley, Ash notices a small town up ahead. Brock reads his guidebook and declares that it is the township of Eggseter. Suddenly Gary on a pulled skateboard by his Gary passes by. Ash calls out to his rival and challenges him to a battle. Gary, however, declines. He explains that he and Arcanine are entering the Extreme Pokémon Race before rushing off to continue his training. Ash and ashfr give chase, and watch in amazement as other Trainers also practice.

Back at the farm, Ash wonders which Pokemon to use, since after all he has to have the one. He knows Pikachu can't do it, neither can Cyndaquil or Totodile. Ash sends out Bayleef, which should do the job just fine. Ash starts off training Bayleef for a while, starting off with directions, but as soon as he told Bayleef to change on direction, he slid off. Meowth is later spying on him, telling Jesse and James that he's up to something again. Noticing that they're slacking off, he wakes them up and tells them the info.
Later, the group stops off in a restaurant. Misty notices that Ash is still not satisfied, and he admits that he is worried about the collar around Arcanine's neck. A man, Mr. Shellby, overhears the conversation and explains that Extreme Pokémon is a popular sport. With the mention of competition, Ash is determined to beat Gary in the upcoming Extreme Pokémon competition. Mr. Shellby offers to assist. During a Tauros cart ride, Mr. Shellby explains that he operates a local Pokémon Day Care Center, responsible for raising young Pokémon from Eggs. The group soon arrives at Mr. Shellby's home and meets his wife Kimie. The group looks around the home and see shelves full of Pokémon Eggs, and they also meet some of the new hatchlings. Mr. Shellby shows Ash to his old skateboard and lends it to him for the upcoming race. Ash rides down the sloping hills on the property and admits that he used to mountainboard back in Pallet Town.

After a while, Tamazo is ahead yelling towards Ash. He tells him that the egg he's giving him is the relay baton. And so they head off after a while.
During his practice, Ash hits a rock in his path, though Arcanine comes to his rescue. Gary spots the skateboard and realizes that Ash is also entering the race. Ash is confident that he will win, and the rivals vow to do their best. Later, Ash considers which Pokémon to choose. Pikachu is keen to compete, though Ash selects Bayleef, hoping her strength will help him win the race. As he and Bayleef practice, MTR spots them through his binoculars. He turns around but is forced to shout to wake his teammates up. James reveals that he received a pamphlet advertising a Pokémon race. Meowth glances through and realizes that Ash must be training for the event. The thought of strong Pokémon instantly excites James and Meowth, but Jessie declares that they will just steal the winner to avoid further complications.

The next day is the race, all the contestants line up at the starting point as the announcer explains everything. At the start of the race, every is off to a good start but a racer with a Scyther causes a big mess up at the beggining, causing a lot of the racers to fall back. Ash, Gary and a few others make it out however. Meanwhile, Team Rocket float in a balloon above, planing out their scheme. They soon fire their net-cannon and capture Gary's Arcanine! Ash stops to see if Gary is alright and then they look up to Team Rocket, who soon flies away.
Meanwhile, Brock test tastes Kimie's homemade Pokémon food and is impressed by its quality. Misty watches as Pikachu and Misty enjoy the food as well. Mr. Shellby interrupts Ash's practice to alert him to another condition of the race. He hands Ash a dummy Egg, which will be needed for the final leg of the race. The new addition takes Ash by surprise. Ash returns to his training session, now with the dummy Egg in hand.

Ash soon charges after them, telling Bayleef to flail him towards a slope. As Ash hits the slope, he jumps towards the balloon, the skateboard causing it to poke a hole, however Ash is still stuck on it, and he flies with them. Later at the the starting point where all the bleachers are, the monitor is at Tamazo's farm. Noticing a surprised expression from Tamazo, the camera turns and ends up getting knocked out by Team Rocket's balloon!
On the day of the Eggseter Extreme Pokémon Race, the announcer explains that the competitors will make their way through the winding Eggseter Valley however they like, where the Shellby Ranch marks the first stop. Participants must pick up a dummy Egg and race back to the starting line, concluding the event. The race begins at a rapid pace. Soon, a Trainer's Scyther soars into the air, knocking several contestants off their boards. Several competitors including Gary and Ash emerge from the subsequent dust cloud and continue racing ahead. Gary and Arcanine take the lead during the mountainous section, and soon Ash catches up. Team Rocket floats overhead in their Meowth balloon and sends down a net that captures Gary's Arcanine. Ash commands his Bayleef to launch him at the balloon, and he uses his skateboard to pierce it. Ash lands with the balloon, Team Rocket, and Arcanine at Mr. Shellby's house. As Arcanine escapes from Team Rocket, James steals baskets of Pokémon Eggs from Mr. Shellby. Jessie sends out her Jessie to defend the team as they escape, but Bayleef appears and battles Arbok. Arbok's Poison Sting overpowers Bayleef, but Gary arrives just in time and commands Arcanine to Take Down Arbok. Team Rocket resorts to running away, but Ash's Bayleef reclaims the Eggs using her vines, and Team Rocket is sent blasting off by Arcanine's Flame Wheel.

Tamazo wonders what's going on, and he sees Ash come out of the balloon. Ash wonders if Arcanine is okay and he is, but Team Rocket soon find a catch of eggs! Jesse sends out Arbok to defend them, but with no Pokemon on him, Ash can't do anything, except when Bayleef makes her way. Ash tells Bayleef to use Razor Leaf but is blocked by a Poison Pin attack and that hits Bayleef. Arbok is about to make another attack when Gary comes in to tell Arcanine to bash it out of the way. Team Rocket soon make their way out with the eggs but Bayleef gets them back with a Vine Whip. Then Arcanine hits the whole group with a Master Attack, sending them off.
Ash and Gary are still in the lead, but the rest of the competitors are catching up. They are given their dummy Eggs by Mr. Shellby and continue the race. Gary is slightly ahead of Ash on the return and Ash spots an overhanging cliff, and he uses it as a ramp to catch up to Gary. With the finish line in sight, Gary has Arcanine speed up. Ash orders Bayleef to do the same, and she whips herself to make the leap forward. Her head is narrowly ahead, making for a photo finish victory for Ash. Gary is at first annoyed but takes it in good faith. Ash stands proudly on the winner's podium with the Golden Poké Ball trophy in hand, and Bayleef next to him with her own medal. Gary later congratulates Ash on the victory before waving goodbye.

After that, Tamazo gives Gary and Ash the eggs and both of them race off towards the finish. Arcanine is pretty good at keeping a pace or two higher than Bayleef. Ash tries to find another way he can manage and finds a slope. Gary wonders where Ash is but soon he sees him, coming up from above! The competition seems close as both try to race for the goal. Aranine jumps towards it giving him a good speed but then Bayleef uses Vine Whip on herself to give her a added boost. At the finish line, all it comes to is Bayleef winning by a nose. Ash wins the Pokemon Ride Race!
Mr. Shellby and his wife approaches Ash. They give him a light blue Pokémon Egg as a present. Misty is curious about what is inside, but Kimie whispers that it is a secret. Mr. Shellby explains that the Poké Ball on top of the Egg case should be used to catch the new hatchling. The Day Care couple waves as the group sets off towards Mahogany Town once again.

Afterwards, Gary sets off on his own journey. Tamazo later comes by to present Ash with an egg. Misty wonders what's inside, but Tamazo's wife says they'll just have to wait and see. Soon the gang sets off towards Mahogany City.

Plot

Continuing through a winding valley, Ash notices a small town up ahead. Brock reads his guidebook and declares that it is the township of Eggseter. Suddenly Gary on a pulled skateboard by his Arcanine passes by. Ash calls out to his rival and challenges him to a battle. Gary, however, declines. Ash and his friends give chase, and watch in amazement as other Trainers also practice.

• As Gary is leaving, he says, "See you at Johto", despite this episode taking place in Johto. However, he could be referring to the Johto League.
 • When Gary walks off in the final scene, the ground changes from grass to dirt.
 • In the English dub, when seeing the baby Wooper, Misty incorrectly refers to them as "Woopers". The plural of a specific species of Pokémon is the same as the singular.
 • In the Polish dub, when Team Rocket spies on Ash as he is riding the skateboard, Ash says "right" twice.
