== Woobat is not a Honduran white bat. ==

Currently, the Origins section of Woobat’s page claims that it’s based on the Honduran white bat. I’ve tried to remove this claim, but my edit was reverted. Perhaps my reason for editing was unclear, so I’ll detail it here. In part due to Woobat, I’ve developed a strong interest in bats. I research bats in my free time, I follow several bat rehabs on Instagram, and I own a large book of photos from prolific bat photographer Merlin Tuttle. It’s safe to say that I know what bats look like, so I can confidently say that Woobat has almost nothing in common with the Honduran white bat, and the editors’ insistence that this bat is Woobat’s primary basis indicates an apathy towards bats, and perhaps towards fact-checking in general.

The Honduran white bat is quite an odd bat, with many traits that set it apart from others. Woobat generally does not share these traits. It’s not white, it doesn’t have large eyes, its nose-leaf isn’t yellow or pointed, it doesn’t eat fruit, it doesn’t live in forests, and it doesn’t make tents out of leaves. The traits it does share with the Honduran white bat are traits also possessed by many other species. It’s pale, but light-colored fur is quite a common trait in bats, while actual white fur is rare. It has a nose-leaf, but so do hundreds of bats, and Woobat’s is a more typical pinkish color, while the Honduran white bat’s is distinctly yellow. The only uncommon trait of the Honduran white bat that Woobat shares is the round shape it appears to have from certain angles, but this could easily be a stylistic choice, and many other bats have rounded bodies. There’s also the “fact” that Woobat’s shiny coloration loosely resembles a Honduran white bat under a green leaf, but this is a great stretch, and it’s unknown if shiny coloration was even manually selected in Generation V.

The most likely reason this site claims that Woobat is inspired by the Honduran white bat is because it’s popular. It’s one of the few species of bats, along with flying foxes and one specific photo of an eastern red bat that resembles a donut, that is widely known on the Internet for its cuteness. It’s likely that an editor noticed that Woobat is cute, round, pale, and has a nose-leaf, and knowing very little about bats, assumed that those traits are exclusive to one of the few bats they’ve seen before. But Honduran white bats weren’t popular during Black and White’s development, and Pokémon developers have never given much special attention to popular animals, as exemplified by Fossil Pokémon (we got a sea lily before we got a T. rex).

So, what is Woobat based on? Well, like all other bat Pokémon, it’s a mix of different bats. It embodies the general concept of a small, fluffy, cave-dwelling, bug-eating bat. This description fits most bats native to New York (Unova’s basis), but New York doesn’t have any leaf-nosed bats, so it may not be based solely on local species. The heart-nosed bat, though quite different-looking, may be part of the inspiration for Woobat’s literal heart nose, and Woobat’s round nose-leaf and sharp incisors are a bit reminiscent of the three species of vampire bats (ironic, since Woobat only eats insects, and Zubat does drink blood but looks more like an insectivorous bat).

Why is this important? Because I dislike the spread of misinformation, and Bulbapedia facts are often parroted by content creators. Additionally, I think it’s important to appreciate bats beyond the popular ones, as they play an essential role in ecosystems, and they’re just generally cute and underrated. What I’m mainly asking for is the ability to correct Woobat’s Bulbapedia page without the edit being reverted, and possibly the deletion or archival of the faulty Bulbanews post about Woobat’s origins. Thank you for your consideration. [[User:HopHoppipHarvest|HopHoppipHarvest]] ([[User talk:HopHoppipHarvest|talk]]) 14:46, 11 July 2024 (UTC)

Woobat is not a Honduran white bat.
