Synopsis
Blurb
The episode started off with Ash and friends walking through the woods, Aipom and Pikachu walking outside of their Poké Balls. Ash was ready and raring to go to fight Pyramid King of the Battle Frontier (Generation III). Finally, after a long while in the woods, Ash and the others made it out and to a field.

<i>On the way to Fennel Valley, Ash's Aipom scampers away and runs into a Weavile with an attitude. Aipom's up for a battle, but Weavile deals it a harsh defeat! Luckily, Ash and his friends meet a passing wilderness guardian named Kerrigan, who lets Aipom rest at his home. Kerrigan explains that the Weavile belonged to a local group of Weavile and Sneasel, but now it's alone and challenges any Trainer's Pokémon it sees. Ash resolves to help Kerrigan find the stray Weavile before anyone else is hurt.

Everyone decided to take a rest while Aipom and Pikachu ran off to play. Aipom, interested in the flowers, wandered off and got lost and came face-to-face with a wild Weavile. The Weavile challenged Aipom to a battle and proceeded to use Shadow Ball; the explosion alerted the gang that Aipom was in trouble. Once the gang caught up to Aipom, May scanned the Weavile with her Pokédex. Ash asked if the Weavile wants to battle, to which it replied with another Shadow Ball. The gang moves out of harms way, only to be attacked by another Shadow Ball.
Team Rocket wants to find Weavile, but once they do, it's not interested in joining their gang. Ash and his friends can't seem to get through to the Weavile, either. Then a Sneasel shows up on the scene, and the truth comes out! The stray Weavile was leader of the Weavile and Sneasel group, until another Weavile came and beat it in a battle for leadership. However, the new leader turned out to be a bully, and so Sneasel left the group as well.

Ash angrily battled the Weavile, making his Pikachu use Thunderbolt. Weavile dodged the attack swiftly and used yet another Shadow Ball. Pikachu tried to dodge, but got caught in the explosion. Aipom quickly covered for Pikachu. Ash ordered Aipom to use Swift, but Weavile dodged. Ash told Aipom to use Double Team and go into another Swift. Once Aipom was close enough, she used Swift again. Still, Weavile was able to dodge it and went straight into a Shadow Ball attack, hurting Aipom. Aipom was immediately knocked out.
That's when the Weavile leader shows up to bring Sneasel back. Ash challenges the stray Weavile to stand up for itself and help Sneasel, and both Weavile decide to battle. The stray Weavile comes out the winner and becomes leader once again. The losing Pokémon won't be left out in the cold this time, because Sneasel asks both Weavile to cooperate with each other—and they agree! Now the forest will once again be at peace, and our heroes can continue their journey to Ash's rematch with Brandon!</i>

The gang looked to see Weavile was gone. A man ran over, asking if they were okay. He saw Aipom and said he had a hut in the woods; a nice place for Aipom to rest. The gang followed him.
Plot
While heading towards the Battle Pyramid for Ash's final Frontier challenge, the group takes a break in a forest clearing. Aipom, interested in the flowers, wanders off and gets lost, coming face-to-face with a wild Weavile. Weavile challenges Aipom to a battle, starting with Shadow Ball; the explosion alerts the group that Aipom is in trouble. Rushing over, May scans the Weavile with her Pokédex. Ash asks if the Weavile wants to battle, to which it replies with another Shadow Ball. The gang quickly moves out of harm's way, only to be attacked by another Shadow Ball. Ash has Pikachu use Thunderbolt, though Weavile evades and replies with another Shadow Ball. Pikachu attempts to dodge, but gets caught in the crossfire. Aipom quickly covers for Pikachu, although Weavile dodges her Swift attack. Ash tells Aipom to use Double Team, followed by Swift. Still, Weavile is able to dodge and goes straight into a Shadow Ball attack, hurting Aipom and knocking her out. While Weavile leaves the scene, Jessie of TRT hopes to add the aggressive Pokémon to her team. MTR advises against it, and soon leaves to fight Weavile on his own.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket were eating their rice balls, watching the whole thing. MTR said it'd be best if they stayed away from the Weavile, but Jessie had other plans. She was eager to catch it. Meowth claimed that they were going to give it to Giovanni, but Jessie wanted it all to herself. Angrily, claimed he wanted to fight the Weavile himself.
Looking up after helping Aipom, the group notices Weavile has disappeared. Soon enough Kerrigan, a member of the Wilderness Guard Corps, invites the group to his base to help Aipom recover. Once inside the small cabin, the group inquires about the Weavile. Kerrigan says the Weavile is a stray and that there is a gang of both Weavile and Sneasel. He claims that Weavile had left the group and now challenges random Trainers to battle it. Kerrigan decides it would be best if he went outside and searched around. The group decides to tag along, leaving Aipom to rest after her harsh battle. Kerrigan leads them to a forest location, which Weavile is known to frequent. However, Weavile isn't there, so Max suggests Pikachu track it down using its scent.

The episode switches to a small cabin in the woods. The man from earlier introduces himself as Kerrigan, part of the Wilderness Guard Core. He's the one that watches over the forest. After the gang introduces themselves, they inquire about the Weavile. Kerrigan says the Weavile is a stray and that there is a gang of both Weavile and Sneasel. He claims that Weavile had left the group and now challenges random Trainers to battle it. Kerrigan decides it'd be best if he went outside and searched around. The gang decides to tag along, leaving Aipom to rest after her harsh battle.
Meanwhile, the stray Weavile glumly looks at its reflection in the river. Jessie and James watch as Meowth approaches it, dressed as a fellow Weavile. Weavile, however, doesn't seem to buy that Meowth is a fellow Weavile at all, even smacking away Meowth's hand to avoid a handshake. After Weavile threatens him, Meowth flees to the safety of his teammates. Jessie, unsatisfied with Meowth's claims, angrily threatens to do worse to Meowth if he doesn't get out and talk to Weavile. Before Meowth can react, Ash and friends show up. Pikachu runs over to Weavile and begins to talk to it. Meowth translates for Jessie and James, saying that Pikachu asked what Weavile was doing, to which Weavile replied that it didn't need to answer that question. After that, Meowth couldn't follow. Jessie angrily stands up, yelling at Meowth and revealing their position to the twerps. After their motto, Jessie throws herself at Weavile's feet.

The episode switches to the stray Weavile. It begins to have a flashback about it and a female Sneasel in the rain. It seemed to have come from a harsh battle, limping away. After the flashback, Weavile jumps down from the tree it was in and runs off.
Soon, a Sneasel runs over, happy to see the stray Weavile. Meowth begins to translate their conversation. Weavile asks the Sneasel why she had followed it, to which Sneasel replies that she wasn't following the Weavile, she was escaping from the rogue Weavile that the stray Weavile had fought with for leadership. However, Weavile had lost the match, ending up with a scar on its face, and also becoming a stray. Weavile explains that its motives behind attacking the random Trainers was to be tough. The female Sneasel reveals she was sick of being pushed around by the rogue Weavile, which turned out to be extremely mean, so she ran away from the group. Immediately following the speech, the rogue Weavile shows up, with three other Weavile as backup. Sneasel cowers behind the stray Weavile, to which Jessie responds that the Weavile was hers. Weavile, angered by her, easily sends Team Rocket blasting off with a Shadow Ball.

Meanwhile, the gang and Kerrigan are searching for Weavile. They come to a spot where Kerrigan says he's seen Weavile many times. When there are no Weavile in sight, Max gets an idea to use Pikachu to sniff out the Weavile. Pikachu sniffs the air and runs off with the gang right behind.
Soon, the battle between the four Weavile and the stray Weavile ensues. The three Weavile attack first, but are in turn attacked by Pikachu. The rogue Weavile angrily attacks the stray, beginning a one-on-one battle with both Weavile running along the river bank. The rogue uses Shadow Ball which is easily dodged by the stray, who also uses Shadow Ball. The stray's Shadow Ball hits the water, splashing it up between the two. The rogue Weavile jumps through the water and tries to slash Weavile's face with its claws. Weavile is able to block the attack with its own claws and send the rogue Weavile flying into the water, following up with a Shadow Ball. Unfortunately, the other Weavile is able to escape, using Shadow Ball on the stray one. The stray Weavile remembers its previous battle with the rogue Weavile and realises it was planning on using the Shadow Ball as a distraction to slash at its face like before. Weavile dodges the oncoming Shadow Ball and is able to use its claws to throw the rogue away. Almost defeated, the rogue Weavile lands beside the riverbank. The stray jumps on top of it and thrusts its claws at it. The rogue braces itself, but no attack comes. Sparing the rogue Weavile, the stray has now regained its place as the leader. Both the new leader and the rogue Weavile made a truce, with Sneasel's help. After thanking Ash, Weavile walks off in peace to go back to its group with Sneasel and the others.
Ash and his friends head back to the cabin, finding a fully recovered Aipom. With their work done, the group says goodbye to Kerrigan. Aipom happily runs on ahead, setting the pace for everyone else to catch up as they journey towards the Battle Pyramid.

Again, the episode goes back to the stray Weavile, looking in a river and watching its reflection. Meowth approaches the Weavile dressed as a fellow Weavile. Jessie and James watch as Meowth talks to the Weavile. Weavile doesn't seem to buy that Meowth is a fellow Weavile at all, even smacking his hand away when Meowth wanted to shake. Weavile seemed to threaten Meowth as Meowth ran away  nervously. Meowth says that the Weavile threatened to use Meowth as a target. Jessie, unsatisfied with Meowth's claims, angrily threatens to do worse to Meowth if he didn't get back out there and talk to the Weavile. Before Meowth can react, the gang shows up. Pikachu runs over to Weavile and begins to talk to it.

Meowth then translates for Jessie and James, saying that Pikachu asked what Weavile was doing, to which Weavile replied that it didn't need to answer that question. After that, Meowth couldn't follow. Jessie angrily stood up, yelling at Meowth and revealing their position to the gang. After their motto, Jessie throws herself at Weavile's feet.

Soon, a Sneasel runs over, happy to see the stray Weavile. Meowth begins to translate their conversation. Weavile asks the Sneasel why she had followed it, to which Sneasel replies that she wasn't following the Weavile, she was escaping from the rogue Weavile that that particular stray Weavile had fought with for leadership. A flashback shows the fierce battle between the two Weavile and shows how the stray had gotten those three scars on its cheek. Weavile had lost and that was why it became a stray.

Weavile claimed that its motives behind attacking the random trainers was to be big and tough and show everyone what its made of. The female Sneasel was sick of being pushed around by the rogue Weavile, which turned out to be extremely mean, so she ran away from the group. Immediately following the speech, the rogue Weavile shows up. The Sneasel cowers behind the stray Weavile, to which Jessie responded that the Weavile was hers. Weavile, angered by her, blasted her and the other two away with a Shadow Ball.

With some encouraging words from Ash, the battle between the four Weavile and the stray Weavile ensued. First, the three Weavile attacked, but were in turn attacked by Ash's Pikachu. The rogue Weavile looked angry and attacked the stray. The battle begun with both Weavile running along the river bank. The rogue used Shadow Ball. This was easily dodged by the stray who also used Shadow Ball. The Shadow Ball hit the water, splashing it up between the two. The rogue Weavile came through the water and tried to slash Weavile's face with its claws. Weavile was able to block the attack with its own claws and send the rogue Weavile flying into the water. It then used Shadow Ball where the rogue splashed into the river.

Unfortunately, the other Weavile was able to escape. It used Shadow Ball on the stray Weavile. Weavile remembered its previous battle with the rogue Weavile and knew it was planning on using the Shadow Ball as a distraction to scratch Weavile's face. Weavile dodged the Shadow Ball and saw the Weavile coming at it, but was able to use its claws to the throw the rogue away. Weavile landed on the ground beside the riverbank. The stray jumped on top of the rogue Weavile and thrust its claws at it. The rogue thought it was over and tightly shut its eyes. Without feeling an impact, the rogue looked up to see the stray's claws were only right above its face. The stray had regained its place as the leader.

Both the new leader and the rogue Weavile made a truce with Sneasel's help. The Weavile, after thanking Ash, walked off in peace to go back to their group.

Ash and friends went back to the cabin, finding a fully recovered Aipom. The gang said goodbye to Kerrigan. Aipom happily ran off, to which Ash said 'that Aipom's nuts'. They soon chased after Aipom, happily going to the Battle Pyramid.

* When Pikachu tracks down Weavile, its right ear feather is gray instead of red.
* In one scene, one of the Weavile's ear feathers is blue instead of the usual red.
** Weavile's left ear feather is gray as well just before blasting TRT off.
* In several scenes, Aipom's Swift attack fails to hit its opponent even though Swift is an unavoidable move.
* When Ash motivates Weavile in the English dub, he says "You let that Weavile walk all over you before", despite the fact that it stood up to and battled the rogue Weavile to defend its tribe's leadership.
* Ash's Aipom takes damage from Weavile's Shadow Ball even though Ghost-type moves do not affect Normal-type Pokémon. This is an example of anime physics.

Dub edits
* In the original Japanese version, the Sneasel that comes for Weavile is mentioned to be female. This isn't mentioned in the English dub.
* In the original Japanese version, Jessie says that the Weavile is cool and calls it "Manyula-sama". James mentions that it is rare for her to call anyone "sama" (the Japanese honorific for someone who is deemed with high respect). In the English dub, Jessie calls Weavile "sir" and handsome, and James comments that she wouldn't even call Giovanni "sir".

While Weavile leaves the scene, Jessie of Team Rocket hopes to add the aggressive Pokémon to her team. Meowth advises against it, and soon leaves to fight Weavile on his own.

Trivia

Errors

  • When Pikachu tracks down Weavile, its right ear feather is gray instead of red.
    • Weavile's left ear feather is gray as well just before blasting Team Rocket off.
  • When Ash motivates Weavile in the English dub, he says "You let that Weavile walk all over you before", despite the fact that it stood up to and battled the rogue Weavile to defend its tribe's leadership.

Dub edits

  • In the original Japanese version, the Sneasel that comes for Weavile is mentioned to be female. This isn't mentioned in the English dub.
  • In the original Japanese version, Jessie says that the Weavile is cool and calls it "Manyula-sama". James mentions that it is rare for her to call anyone "sama" (the Japanese honorific for someone who is deemed with high respect). In the English dub, Jessie calls Weavile "sir" and handsome, and James comments that she wouldn't even call Giovanni "sir".
