Introduction
After a brief cutscene, press the A Button or Start on the title screen. The player is first presented with three options, Control Info, Adventure Info, and No Info Needed.

-----
Control Info explains that tapping on the Touch Screen can be used to confirm selections and advance conversations. Different actions may be displayed with the A Button icon on the lower screen, depending on the situation. If the dual-screen icon is shown in the message window, then there are active buttons that may be pressed on the Touch Screen. The various buttons and their effects are then displayed.

Adventure Info gives background information about the player's "grand adventure". It is recommended that the player speak to everyone they find and investigate things wherever they may be, as doing so gathers the information needed to overcome challenges, solve mysteries, and discover the way forward. By overcoming the challenges posed by other Trainers and wild Pokémon, the player will grow stronger, but this is not the game's only goal. The more important objective is the hope that the player meets countless people and, through them, achieves personal growth.

Just like in Gold and Silver, Professor Oak introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world. His lecture is important for new players, though it's nothing new to veterans of the series. Once he has finished talking, choose a gender for your character. After choosing, the character's gender cannot be changed. Then, you have to enter your character's name. The name cannot be changed either, so double-check that you have what you want. Press "OK" when you are happy with your choice, and your sprite will shrink to the overworld sprite.
Selecting No Info Needed causes the famous Pokémon researcher, Professor Oak, to appear and introduce new Trainers to the Pokémon world. Next, the player is prompted to select a gender for their character, and to enter the character's name, which may be up to seven characters long. With that done, the player is transported into the world of Pokémon to begin their adventure!

The journey begins in New Bark Town, in the southeast part of the Johto region. It is a rather small, sleepy town with only four buildings. The northeastern house belongs to you and Mom, while the southeastern one is home to your friend, Lyra/Ethan. The large building to the north is Elm's Laboratory, where the resident researcher of the Johto region lives with his family on the second floor. The west side of town leads to the tall grasses of 29, and the waters to the east open up to 27.

The journey begins in your bedroom. The PC can be used to access your Mailbox and view any Mail that you may have received. There is already one entry stored here, a message from your friend, Lyra/Ethan, that proclaims their love of Pokémon.

1F
Mom is sitting at the table, and approaches you when you walk downstairs. She tells you that Lyra/Ethan was just here, playing hide-and-seek with their Marill. She suddenly remembers that Professor Elm has been looking for you, as he has a favor to ask, and reminds you that his laboratory is located right next door. She then prepares you to go out by handing you your Bag and Trainer Card.

Buttons for Bag, Trainer Card, Save, and Options now appear on the Touch Screen.

To leave the house, step on the floor mat along the south wall and press Down on the +Control Pad.

A Friendly Face
When you first step outside, a Marill excitedly runs up to you, mistaking you for its Trainer. Lyra/Ethan leaves the second floor of the lab a moment later, and the two return to their home.

After listening to Oak's lecture, you wake up in your room. Walk downstairs to find your mom, who enables the <i>Bag, Trainer Card, Save,</i> and <i>Options</i> on the lower screen. When she is done talking, step outside to explore your hometown.
The Spy
Silver can be seen peering into Elm's Lab through a side window. If you try to speak to him, he shoves you back before returning to the window.

After you take your first step, A Marill runs into you, mistaking you for its Trainer, Lyra/Ethan. Your opposite-gender counterpart appears from the second story of the lab and calls it back, and they both run off. As in Gold and Silver, the shady guy peering into Elm's lab will shove you away, telling you to get lost. Enter the lab and speak to Professor Elm, who asks you a favor: it seems his friend Mr. Pokémon has found something, and needs you to bring it back to the lab. He feels that it is too dangerous to leave by yourself, so he lets you choose either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile to accompany you. Before you leave, Elm explains the benefits of letting a Pokémon walk beside you, outside of its Poké Ball. This is one of the most recognizable differences from Gold and Silver: a Trainer's lead Pokémon will follow behind them, like Pikachu did in Yellow.
Professor Elm's Lab
Professor Elm has been waiting for you. He gives a bit of background info about his research, explaining that before the Poké Ball was invented, Pokémon used to walk alongside their Trainer, just as Lyra/Ethan does with Marill. He continues, saying that although keeping Pokémon in Poké Balls is convenient, there must be advantages to having them walk alongside people, as it may affect their growth or evolution. Elm declares that he is going to give you a Pokémon, and asks that you let it travel outside of its Poké Ball to find out if his research is true. He directs you to a large machine with three Poké Balls to choose from.

Before you can do so, Elm notices that he has received an email. An acquaintance of his, nicknamed Mr. Pokémon, studies Pokémon as a hobby and regularly contacts the professor about his findings. Elm suggests that these discoveries are not usually as exciting as they are made out to be, and assumes it to be another Pokémon Egg. He and his aides are busy with their research, so he asks that you go in his place. To accompany you on the trip, he lets you choose one of his rare Pokémon. Each has its advantages and disadvantages, so simply choose the one that you like the best.

Cyndaquil is a good choice because it and its evolution are very fast and have high Sp. Atk, which makes Special-based moves much more powerful (most Fire-type moves are Special-based, such as Flamethrower, Ember, Lava Plume and Eruption). The Cyndaquil evolutionary line's Attack is bad, but the line only learns one Physical-based Fire-type move, Flame Wheel, so it doesn't matter a lot. However, the evolutionary line's Defense and Sp. Def is also quite low, so if the foe launches a super effective move (Water-, Ground- or Rock-type move), the foe may knock Cyndaquil or its evolutions out in one or two shots.

Totodile is a fairly good choice since its evolution can learn moves that cover different types (such as Superpower, Crunch and Ice Fang) and the above-mentioned shady guy will then choose Chikorita which can easily be beaten by Pidgey, or even Croconaw's Ice Fang. It's a shame that the Sp. Atk of Totodile and its evolution is low, which makes Special-based moves (most of the Water-type moves are Special-based, such as Surf, Water Gun and Hydro Pump) deal less damage. Also, strong moves like Aqua Tail and Superpower come late.
* The Grass Chikorita does well against Water-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon. It also has the most weaknesses of the trio, and fares poorly against Fire-, Flying-, Bug-, Poison-, and Ice attacks. Chikorita may struggle early on, making it better suited for those looking for a challenge.
* The Fire Cyndaquil is great when battling Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel Pokémon, but is vulnerable to Water-, Rock-, and Ground moves. Cyndaquil's typing gives it an easier time in the early part of the game, making it a good choice for less experienced Trainers.
* The Water Totodile has an advantage when facing Fire-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon, but may struggle against Grass- and Electric attacks. It is the most well-rounded of the trio.

Chikorita is a defensive Pokémon. Its offensive side is not good. Although it can learn Petal Dance and SolarBeam, these strong Grass-type moves come late. However, it can learn Reflect and Light Screen, which can boost Defense and Sp. Def of the whole team for a few turns.
After choosing your first partner Pokémon, you are given the chance to choose a nickname for it. A nickname may be up to ten characters long. The young Pokémon pops out of its Poké Ball, and Elm tells you that you may use the machine behind him to heal your Pokémon at any time. He informs you that Mr. Pokémon lives a short distance from Cherrygrove City, to the west of New Bark Town.

All Pokémon have their advantages and disadvantages (in other words, strength and weaknesses). Choose the Pokémon you like and train it well, then it will be very strong and helpful.
As you leave the building, his aide gives you five Potions.

Mr. Pokémon lives on Route 30, but you'll have to cut through Route 29 and Cherrygrove City first. On your way out, Elm's aide gives you 5 Potions. Step back outside to find Lyra/Ethan, who tells you to visit your mom before leaving. Stop back home to pick up your Pokégear from Mom. It only has a Pokégear now, but will soon act as a map and radio as well. Leave your home and walk west towards 29, and Elm runs out of the lab to give you his phone number.
Meet Up with Lyra/Ethan
When you leave the lab with your new Pokémon, Lyra/Ethan and Marill are waiting for you. She/He is excited to see the Pokémon that you chose, and suggests showing it to Mom.

Route 29
Home
Speak to Mom, and she compliments your new Pokémon. After learning about Elm's task, she tells you that your Pokégear is back from the repair shop, and hands it to you.

There's no way to avoid the tall grass on the way to Cherrygrove City, so train your starter by fighting off the wild Pokémon. Follow the dead-end trail in the northeast to find a Potion in the clearing. Further to the west is the first Apricorn tree that you'll find, though you don't have anything to store it in right now. Stop by this area on a Tuesday to find Tuscany, one of the seven Week Siblings, who will give you a Type-enhancing item on your first meeting. Continue moving west to reach Cherrygrove City.
The Pokégear button now appears on the Touch Screen.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #soulsilver color light; -moz-border-radius: 1em; border: 5px solid #heartgold color light;"
She goes on to explain that the Pokégear is a handy device that every Trainer should have. It can even make phone calls by selecting the Phone icon and tapping on the name of a registered contact. The device has one contact listed, as Mom's phone number is already included.

One More Thing
As you approach 29, Professor Elm leaves his lab and catches up to you. He forgot to do this earlier, and gives you his phone number for your Pokégear.

On your way into the city, a nimble old man ambushes you and gives you a speedy tour of the city - the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart, the path to Route 30, and the ocean. After the tour, he gives you the Running Shoes. These shoes appear on the touch screen, and can be equipped indefinitely (unlike in Generation III, where it was controlled by the B button). Heal up at the Poké Center if need be, buy a few Potions, and head for Cherrygrove's northern exit. Before you can leave, the Guide Gent shows up again, this time to give you the Pokégear for your Pokégear, which allows you to view a map of the Johto region anytime. Leave the city for 30 to the north.
Route 29
{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #soulsilver color light; -moz-border-radius: 1em; border: 5px solid #heartgold color light;"
29 is a hilly path that runs west from New Bark Town to Cherrygrove City. Westbound travelers must pass through patches of tall grass, while eastbound travelers can jump over a series of ledges to avoid these grasses and the wild Pokémon inside. To the north, 46 leads down from the mountains.

There's plenty of tall grass here, which makes this route an ideal spot for training. Pick up the Potion near the pond, and continue north to reach the first house. Talk to the man inside, and he will give you the List of key items in Generation IV, which means that you can finally start collecting them all. (Don't worry about missing the man—if you ignore the house and run straight north, he will come out and stop you.) Step outside and check his tree to pick the green Apricorn growing there. Walk north through the next patch of tall grass, and grab the Status ailment healing item to the left. The route splits into two separate trails here; the western trail is currently blocked by two battling Youngsters, so wander through the tall grass of the eastern trail to find Mr. Pokémon's house at the northern end. Grab the Pnk Apricorn from the tree, and head inside.

Mr Pokémon's house
Mr Pokémon approaches you with the List of key items in Generation IV as soon as you enter, and then his guest steps up. Professor Oak gives you a Pokédex and his phone number before leaving for his radio show. Mr Pokémon will heal your Pokémon before you leave.<br> Leave the house, and you'll get an urgent call from Elm. He doesn't go into detail, but you must hurry back to New Bark!

Cherrygrove City
Make sure your team is rested up before proceeding! It is because as soon as you try to head east from Cherrygrove, that shady guy that was spying on Elm's lab ambushes you, forcing you into a battle. It turns out that he swiped one of Elm's Pokémon from the lab. Whichever you chose, his Pokémon will always have a type advantage against yours, so having a few Potions isn't a bad idea.

Back in New Bark
Hurry to Elm's lab to see the professor talking to the police. The Policeman seems to think that you're the one responsible, but Lyra/Ethan defends you, telling the police that they saw a kid with red hair spying on the lab. Realizing that you have just battled the suspect, the policeman asks you for his name. After naming that shady guy (his official name is Silver, and if you input nothing, the default name, Soul or Heart, depending on your version, will be used) as the culprit, deliver the List of key items in Generation IV to the professor. Elm is intrigued by the discovery, and promises to call you if he learns anything about the Egg. Once he realizes the Professor Oak gave you a Pokédex, he suggests that you challenge the eight Pokémon Gyms of Johto. The first Gym is located in Violet City, off to the northwest. Before you leave (for good this time), stop back home to say goodbye to Mom. She asks if you want to her to save your money; say yes, and she'll act as a bank, and will occasionally buy helpful items, like Potions or rare Berries. (Unlike Generation II, the items are delivered in the Poké Mart or Department store by a Delivery Man instead of through the players' PC.) As you leave New Bark, Lyra/Ethan will give you a quick demonstration on how to catch a wild Pokémon. After the battle, she/he gives you 5 Poké Balls to start you on your collection. Now that you've delivered the Mystery Egg, Poké Marts have added Poké Balls to their inventory (buy 10 at once to receive a free Premier Ball), so with enough cash, you're free to start the hunt.<br>
An Apricorn a Day
The tree on the northwest hill is an Apricorn Tree. Apricorns are a type of fruit that can be processed into Poké Balls, or blended into drinks that improve a Pokémon's athletic performance. There are seven variations of the fruit, with this particular tree producing Green Apricorns. These trees produce one Apricorn per day. However, it is impossible to pick any yet without a container in which to store them.

With Elm's errand complete, you can finally get to Violet City. Return to Cherrygrove and head north to 30 again.

Once you catch a second Pokémon, you can begin sending Pokémon to the Pokéwalker.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Introduction

After a brief cutscene, press the A Button or Start on the title screen. The player is first presented with three options, Control Info, Adventure Info, and No Info Needed.

Input Effect(s)
+Control Pad Moves character; moves cursor in a menu
A Button Interact with people and the environment; select menu options
B Button Cancel a selection; exit a menu
X Button Move within menus
Y Button Use a registered Key Item
Start Opens the main menu

Adventure Info gives background information about the player's "grand adventure". It is recommended that the player speak to everyone they find and investigate things wherever they may be, as doing so gathers the information needed to overcome challenges, solve mysteries, and discover the way forward. By overcoming the challenges posed by other Trainers and wild Pokémon, the player will grow stronger, but this is not the game's only goal. The more important objective is the hope that the player meets countless people and, through them, achieves personal growth.

New Bark Town

New Bark Town
Player's bedroom

The journey begins in New Bark Town, in the southeast part of the Johto region. It is a rather small, sleepy town with only four buildings. The northeastern house belongs to you and Mom, while the southeastern one is home to your friend, Lyra/Ethan. The large building to the north is Elm's Laboratory, where the resident researcher of the Johto region lives with his family on the second floor. The west side of town leads to the tall grasses of Route 29, and the waters to the east open up to Route 27.

Home

2F

The Spy

A young, red-haired man can be seen peering into Elm's Lab through a side window. If you try to speak to him, he shoves you back before returning to the window.

As you leave the building, his aide gives you five Potions.

Meet Up with Lyra/Ethan

When you leave the lab with your new Pokémon, Lyra/Ethan and Marill are waiting for you. She/He is excited to see the Pokémon that you chose, and suggests showing it to Mom.

Home

Speak to Mom, and she compliments your new Pokémon. After learning about Elm's task, she tells you that your Pokégear is back from the repair shop, and hands it to you.

The Pokégear button now appears on the Touch Screen.

She goes on to explain that the Pokégear is a handy device that every Trainer should have. It can even make phone calls by selecting the Phone icon and tapping on the name of a registered contact. The device has one contact listed, as Mom's phone number is already included.

One More Thing

As you approach Route 29, Professor Elm leaves his lab and catches up to you. He forgot to do this earlier, and gives you his phone number for your Pokégear.

Route 29

Route 29

Route 29 is a hilly path that runs west from New Bark Town to Cherrygrove City. Westbound travelers must pass through patches of tall grass, while eastbound travelers can jump over a series of ledges to avoid these grasses and the wild Pokémon inside. To the north, Route 46 leads down from the mountains.
