Platinum, released on September 13th, 2008 in Japan and planned to be revealed in 2009 elsewhere, was in development for a long time beforehand. During the planning and development stages of Platinum, several things were going to be a part of the games, but a lot of stuff did not make it to the final games.
Platinum, like other solitary versions of the core series games, contains less pre-release information because it is based on the previous paired versions of the generation. Likewise, few things changed in comparison to Diamond and Pearl.

Rumors and speculations about a sequel or a sister game to Diamond and Pearl started to arise like during the previous three generations. On February 2008, Giratina Origin Forme was revealed to the public, along with speculations of a new Shaymin forme. Shaymin Sky Forme was revealed on a leak June issue of CoroCoro on a low-resolution cell phone photo along with pictures of screenshots from the game that show a new overworld scene and a new in-battle scene for Giratina. Other rumored information included:

A prototype front sprite of Garchomp can be seen in an early Japanese trailer for the game, titled Pocket Monsters: Platinum—Game Introduction Movie (Japanese: ポケットモンスタープラチナ:ゲーム紹介ムービー).

*The eighth gym leader, Volkner, would be replaced.

*The Underground would become WiFi enabled.

*A new area called The Battle Island would be introduced. This was partly true as a new Battle Frontier was introduced.

*There would be a new form of Regigigas, and the speculations about its type ranged from Ice to Flying.
Battle Park
In Platinum, the Battle Park appears as a leftover map in the internal data. It has index number 0x0142, like in Diamond and Pearl<!--, and uses ファイトエリア (バトルフロンティア) Fight Area (Battle Frontier) as the music theme-->.

Pokémon Platinum announced
The Battle Tower's exterior matches the one at the Battle Frontier, including the lack of shadow, and the building's warps have been removed. The prize lists in the Exchange Service Corner are unchanged and are visually the same as the ones at the Battle Frontier's Battle Frontier (Generation IV). The Battle Park's gate was replaced with the Battle Frontier's gate but the non-player characters remain unaltered given their positioning in the map; their events as well as the warps inside the gate have also been removed.
In May 2008, Platinum was officially announced and will be released on 13 September 2008. Soon after Shaymin's Sky Forme was accidentally revealed on a advertisement for a Pokémon drinking cup before the item was quickly taken off. More information was released in the August issue of CoroCoro including official information on Giratina and Shaymin alternate forms along with information on the Ruined World and the Regigigas event. Pictures were revealed introducing Giratina Origin Forme in battle and the archway into Floaroma Town. Then finally in July 2008, the first trailer for Pokémon Platinum came out during an event showing more of the Ruined World and revealing more battle scenes and areas.

Sprites
The event where the player first meets Palmer is still present. The Razor Fang also remains.

During the planning and development stages of Platinum, several sprites were going to be a part of the games. As Platinum has a different sprite set to Diamond and Pearl, some sprites were dropped or changed since the early screenshots of Platinum.
Before the game was released, there are pictures from Coro-Coro Magazine that showed a beta sprite for Shaymin's Sky Forme. This was soon dropped and redesigned for the final version.

Another sprite of Giratina was also shown in several early screenshots of the game.
Distortion World
There are 9 unused maps of the Distortion World in the data of the game's ROM. They use the regular camera angle and not the special one used in the final Distortion World.

Beta items
TGL7q4te30U
It has been discovered that various items still remain in the coding of Platinum that were also in Diamond and Pearl. These items can be obtained using Action Replay and other means of cheating, but cannot be used. They are:

*S.S. Ticket, that allows entry for the luxury liner S.S. Anne (a possible reference to or ).
Sprites
*Contest Pass that would allow entry into Contests. However, Super Contests allow entry without a pass.
An earlier sprite for Giratina's List of Pokémon with form differences appeared in several pre-release screenshots. An unused animation frame for the final sprite has also been found in the internal data. Unused sets of sprites for Shaymin's List of Pokémon with form differences as well as prototype sprites for the items which change Rotom's List of Pokémon with form differences are also present.
*Magma Rock would be a mystical item that could be used in Stark Mountain. Although it hasn't any known purpose, it is possible it would have something to do with the Heatran event.
*Red Chain is a creation by the lake trio that would be used to awaken Dialga or Palkia. Cyrus actually himself uses the item in-game, and it's possible that the Team Galactic event at Spear Pillar was initially to be activated by the player.
*Rule Book was a book that would be used as a guide when using the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. It's possible that this was removed since these guidelines were contained in the games' instruction book.
*Seal Bag held up to 10 Seals, but was replaced with the Seal Case.
*Treasure Sack was meant to hold treasures from the Underground. It was replaced with special selections for the Underground.

In addition to Platinum's exclusive tracks, all unused tracks found in the internal data of Diamond and Pearl are also present.

Items
The unused items discovered in the internal data of Diamond and Pearl are still present in Platinum, but with additional unused items as well. Additionally, two key items that were used in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl but have no use in Pokémon Platinum are still present in the game's data:
* Point Card, which stores Battle Points earned in the Battle Tower. Surprisingly, it will still function despite Battle Points now being tracked by the Vs. Recorder.
* Storage Key, which allows entrance to the Team Galactic Warehouse. It is now used by Looker instead. Modifying the saved game to add the item back to the Bag will not allow it to function.

Debugging features
Leftover dialogue within the internal data provides further details on how the game developers might have debugged the game. For instance, such text refers to features such as a Sound test and an option to modify the real-time clock (RTC).

018Pidgeot.png It has been suggested that this article be moved to Development leftovers of Pokémon Platinum.
Please discuss whether or not to move it on its talk page.

Pokémon Platinum, like other solitary versions of the core series games, contains less pre-release information because it is based on the previous paired versions of the generation. Likewise, few things changed in comparison to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Pre-release

Sprites

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Pre-release screenshots, whether officially available or taken from official video footage, of the other sprites (Giratina, etc.)
Garchomp's earlier sprite

A prototype front sprite of Garchomp can be seen in an early Japanese trailer for the game, titled Pocket Monsters: Platinum—Game Introduction Movie (Japanese: ポケットモンスタープラチナ:ゲーム紹介ムービー).[1]

Post-release

Locations

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: There's a load of other unused maps (link). Check which ones are in Diamond and Pearl and, unless they're different in Platinum, place them in the DP dev article

Battle Park

The Battle Park in Platinum

In Pokémon Platinum, the Battle Park appears as a leftover map in the internal data. It has index number 0x0142, like in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

The Battle Tower's exterior matches the one at the Battle Frontier, including the lack of shadow, and the building's warps have been removed. The prize lists in the Exchange Service Corner are unchanged and are visually the same as the ones at the Battle Frontier's Exchange Service Corner. The Battle Park's gate was replaced with the Battle Frontier's gate but the non-player characters remain unaltered given their positioning in the map; their events as well as the warps inside the gate have also been removed.

The event where the player first meets Palmer is still present. The Razor Fang also remains.

Distortion World

There are 9 unused maps of the Distortion World in the data of the game's ROM. They use the regular camera angle and not the special one used in the final Distortion World.

Sprites

An earlier sprite for Giratina's Origin Forme appeared in several pre-release screenshots. An unused animation frame for the final sprite has also been found in the internal data. Unused sets of sprites for Shaymin's Land Forme as well as prototype sprites for the items which change Rotom's forms are also present.

Music

In addition to Pokémon Platinum's exclusive tracks, all unused tracks found in the internal data of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are also present.

Items

The unused items discovered in the internal data of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are still present in Pokémon Platinum, but with additional unused items as well. Additionally, two key items that were used in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl but have no use in Pokémon Platinum are still present in the game's data:
