The Orange Islands (Japanese: オレンジ諸島 Orange Islands), also known as the Orange Archipelago, are a large chain of tropical islands located south of Kanto and Johto.
In the anime
The Orange Islands were likely developed as the setting for a filler arc while the next generation of games was still under development.
Pokémon Trainers come here to participate in the Orange League, but its tropical climate also attracts many tourists. One effect of the climate is the presence of alternately colored Pokémon. The Officer Jennys and Nurse Joys of the archipelago dress in slightly different attire than those of the other regions, and some appear to have tans. Most of the scattered islands in the archipelago are named after types of oranges or other various citrus, and many are deserted.
According to a map that was released in various English and Japanese books, the Orange Islands are located south of Kanto and Johto.
Ancient texts identify the central region of the archipelago as the source of all the waters of the world and possibly the origin of life.

League
- Main article: Orange League
Only four Orange League Badges are required to participate in championship competition, held on Pummelo Island. Unlike Gyms in other regions, the Orange League requires participants to complete challenges for the leaders of the Orange League, the Orange Crew.
Compared to the Gym Leaders of the other regions Ash has visited, the challenges set by the Orange Crew are not restricted to a building serving as the Gym, with Danny's tasks involving a mountain while Cissy and Rudy had a portion of their challenges involving the ocean. Only Luana hosted hers in a Gym arena although this was an extension to her hotel.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu
The Orange Islands were featured from The Orange Islands to Pikachu's Plan, adapting several events of Ash's adventures in the archipelago, including his captures of Lapras and Snorlax, his Gym battle with Rudy, and his Full Battle against Drake. Unlike in the anime, where he traveled with Misty and Tracey, he mostly travels around the archipelago alone in this adaptation, with Tracey not appearing at all. His main motivation for traveling there, the GS Ball, is also absent, being replaced by Ash's desire to challenge the Orange League.
Pokémon Newspaper Strip
In Pokémon Newspaper Strip, this location is mistakenly referred to as "Orange Island" when it is mentioned in an object-matching puzzle: "Four Pokémon took a plane to Orange Island and got their baggage mixed up!"
Trivia
- The region is only called the Orange Archipelago four times; twice in Pallet Party Panic, once in The Lost Lapras, and once in a Trading Card released for The Power of One. It is otherwise exclusively referred to as the Orange Islands.
- The Orange Islands are the only place where Ash competed in a Pokémon League that did not appear in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, although it was mentioned in Ride, Lapras, Ride!.
- The Orange Islands share several notable similarities with the Alola region, which was introduced six generations later:
- Both are tropical archipelagos.
- Both feature regional form Pokémon.
- Instead of traditional battle-based Gyms, the regions focus on other kinds of challenges.
- Entering the local Pokémon League in both regions requires defeating four notable Trainers on four different islands.
- Ash has won the local Pokémon League on both archipelagos.
