Koffing has a skull and cross-bones below its blissful face. Koffing has been considered to be related to Grimer, who is also a purple Poison-type Pokémon that associates with pollutants. Pokédex entries

Pokémon Red and Blue / Pokémon LeafGreen
Because it stores several kinds of toxic gases in its body, it is prone to exploding without warning.
Pokémon Yellow
In hot places, its internal gases could expand and explode without any warning. Be very careful!
Pokémon Stadium
A Pokémon that is like a thin-skinned balloon filled with a highly toxic gas. Known to occasionally explode.
Pokémon Gold
Its thin, flimsy body is filled with gases that cause constant sniffles, coughs and teary eyes.
Pokémon Silver
The poisonus gases it contains are a little bit lighter than air, keeping it slightly airborne.
Pokémon Crystal
If one gets close enough to it when it expels poisonus gas, the gas swirling inside it can be seen.
Pokémon Ruby
If Koffing becomes agitated, it raises the toxicity of its internal gases and then jets them out from all over its body. This Pokémon may overinflate its round body, then explode.
Pokémon Sapphire
Koffing ebodies toxic substances. It mixes the toxins with raw garbage to set off a chemical reaction that results in a terribly powerful Poison Gas. The higher the temperature, the more gas is concocted by this Pokémon
Pokémon Emerald
Getting up close to a Koffing will give you a chance to observe, through its thin skin, the toxic gases swirling inside. It blows up at the slightest stimulation.
Pokémon FireRed
Its thin, balloon-like body is inflated by horribly toxic gases. It reeks when it is nearby.

Trivia

  • Koffing's original English name was going to be "Ny", the initials of New York.
  • Koffing was depicted as having its skull-and-crossbones pattern being above its face in Pokémon Red and Blue and the Japanese Pokémon Blue, rather than the pattern being under it's face as potrayed in the original versions of Pokémon Red and Green and later games. It is unknown if this was purposely done or if it was a sprite error (similar to the error of Raikou's sprite in Pokémon Gold and Silver).
  • Koffing is the favourite Pokémon of Pokemopolis.

Origin

Considering its looks, its ability to float, and its tendency to explode, it may have been based upon a floating naval mine.

Name origin

Koffing's name is a corruption of the word coughing. Its Japanese word is based on English gas while the do is Japanese for either bad or poisoning.
