The Pokémon Ultimate Handbook by Cris Silvestri (ISBN 0545078865) is a handbook published in October 2008 that acts as a National Pokédex for all 491 Pokémon, excluding Shaymin and Arceus as neither of which had been released at the time of publishing, in alphabetical order starting from Abomasnow and ending in Zubat. The book's final pages consist of a special page featuring Darkrai and a section on all legendary Pokémon (except the previously mentioned Shaymin and Arceus).

An Updated Edition of the book was released in 2009 by the same author. The updated version fixes some of the errors that are present in the first edition, and it also includes entries for Shaymin's Land and Sky forme and Arceus.

Entries

The entries for each Pokémon were structured in an easy-to-read page setup. Each Pokémon has either an entire page to itself, or shares a page with one of its evolutions, or another Pokémon.

Name

Each entry is topped with a large, slab-shaped bar of a random color. Unlike its predecessors, these bars have both its name and species name inside, and the color does not reference its type.

Stats

Below its name, the entries list the following stats:

  1. Pronunciation
  2. Possible Moves (moves the Pokémon will already know and learn along the way)
  3. Type
  4. Height and weight
  5. Region it resides in (either Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh)

The moves do not include the recently learned moves in Platinum.

Image and other information

Each Pokémon has an anime-style picture on its page, with their "flavor text" under their name. Pages for legendary Pokémon have stars within their page and their bar will be white with a glowing stroke around it.

Evolution chain

At the very bottom of the entry there are pictures with arrows between them to show what the Pokémon evolves into. Pokémon that do not evolve do not have any Evolution Chain.

Errors

The updated edition

The errors are often within their species names and sometimes, their pictures.

  • Abra and its evolutions are mistakenly listed as the Psychic Pokémon rather than the Psi Pokémon.
  • Azelf is listed as the Stone Pokémon rather than the Willpower Pokémon.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • In Budew's page, Budew is wrongly stated to be able to learn Bullet Seed by level up.
    • Later reprints of the first edition, as well as the updated edition, replace Budew's move set with Cranidos'/Rampardos' moveset.
  • Celebi is also listed as a Grass/Psychic Pokémon instead of being Psychic/Grass.
  • Cherrim is listed as the Cherry Blossom Pokémon when its simply the Blossom Pokémon.
  • Cresselia is listed as the Crescent Moon Pokémon rather than the Lunar Pokémon.
  • Croagunk is called the Poison Pokémon rather than the Toxic Mouth Pokémon. Its evolution, however, has the correct name.
  • Delibird accidentally has a yellow glow on it's namebox which only the Legendary Pokémon have on their nameboxes.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • Dialga is called the Time Pokémon rather than the Temporal Pokémon.
  • Donphan is listed as the Armor Bird Pokémon when its simply the Armor Pokémon.
  • In Drifloon's page, the picture for Drifloon reads Drifblim and vice versa.
  • On Duskull's page, a picture of its eye is under the picture. The same problem occurs in all of its evolutionary chains.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • It is mistakenly said that Froslass evolves from Glalie. This error, however, is corrected under Snorunt's page.
  • Golem is listed as the Rock Pokémon, like its pre-evolved forms; however, it is known as the Megaton Pokémon.
  • On Golbat's page, it mixes up the Zubat and Crobat pictures.
  • Groudon is misspelled as Groundon in the legendary line up, but this is correct in its page.
  • Ledyba and its evolution have their species name misspelled as Five Start, rather than Five Star.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • Luxio's moveset has been replaced with Roserade's.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • Luxray's moveset has been replaced with Cranidos/Rampardos's.
  • Palkia is called the Space Pokémon rather than the Spacial Pokémon.
  • On Piloswine's page, Mamoswine and Swinub's pictures are reversed.
  • Poliwag, Poliwhirl, and Poliwrath's pages all leave out Politoed, and Politoed's page leaves out Poliwrath.
  • Porygon's picture is used for Porygon2's page and vice versa. The evolution line on all three Pokémon all have this error.
    • All of these are corrected in the updated edition.
  • In Pupitar's evolution chain, the picture for Larvitar reads Tyranitar and vice versa.
  • The moveset for Rampardos is missing the move Endeavor.
  • Rotom is listed as a Legendary Pokémon and is listed in the legendary line up.
    • This is corrected in the updated edition.
  • Scizor is called the Scissors Pokémon rather than the Pincer Pokémon. It has been called this in the anime at one point.
  • In the updated edition, Shaymin's Sky Forme's moveset is missing Air Slash.
  • In Skorupi's page, scorpion is misspelled as scorpian.
  • Squirtle is called the Water Pokémon rather than the Tiny Turtle Pokémon.
  • Staryu is called the Star Fish Pokémon rather than the Star Shape Pokémon.
  • The lineart of Suicune on its entry page and in the legendary lineup are messed up.
  • In Surskit's page, pond is misspelled as pound.
  • In Torkoal's page, coal is misspelled as coral.
  • On Tyrogue's page, it mistakenly states that it can evolve from Hitmonlee into Hitmontop and Hitmonchan. It also makes this mistake on the other evolutionary family pages, where it says it goes to Hitmonlee, then Hitmonchan or Hitmontop.
  • In Zangoose's page, cat is misspelled as car.
  • In Zigzagoon's page, TinyRaccoon is misspelled as tynyracoon.
  • Sky Attack is mostly referred to as Sky Power.
  • Also, Tri Attack is incorrectly called Tri Power.
  • There are several minor move spelling errors such as in Turtwig's page, Synthesis is misspelled as Syntesis, and in Prinplup's page Metal Claw is misspelled as Metal Chew, and in Infernape's page Mach Punch is misspelled as Mash Punch.
  • Grotle's evolution chain has a different picture of Torterra that is not shown in its description.
