Mold Breaker (Japanese: かたやぶり Mold-Breaking) is an Ability introduced in Generation IV. Seventeen Pokémon can have this Ability.
Effect
In battle
Generation IV
When a Pokémon with Mold Breaker is brought out, the message "<name> has Mold Breaker!" will be displayed.
Mold Breaker negates the effects of Abilities that could potentially weaken or negate moves or the side-effects of moves that the Mold Breaker Pokémon use (Mold Breaker will allow the user's Earthquake to hit a Pokémon with Levitate, but has no effect on the player's ally's Earthquake). However, it also applies to moves that hit all Pokémon in Double and Triple Battles (for example, a Pokémon with Mold Breaker that uses Earthquake could hit its ally that has Levitate).
Mold Breaker nullifies the following Abilities (even if they would end up boosting the power of the Mold Breaker Pokémon's move): Battle Armor, Clear Body, Damp, Dry Skin, Filter, Flash Fire, Flower Gift, Heatproof, Hyper Cutter, Immunity, Inner Focus, Insomnia, Keen Eye, Leaf Guard, Levitate, Lightningrod, Limber, Magma Armor, Marvel Scale, Motor Drive, Oblivious, Own Tempo, Sand Veil, Shell Armor, Shield Dust, Simple, Snow Cloak, Solid Rock, Soundproof, Sticky Hold, Storm Drain, Sturdy, Suction Cups, Tangled Feet, Thick Fat, Unaware, Vital Spirit, Volt Absorb, Water Absorb, Water Veil, White Smoke, and Wonder Guard.
Mold Breaker only negates these Abilities in the event they would affect moves used by the Pokémon with Mold Breaker; they are active in any other instance. While Mold Breaker allows a Pokémon to bypass the effects of Abilities that prevent status (i.e. Immunity, Insomnia, Limber, Own Tempo, and Vital Spirit, but not Leaf Guard), the status the Pokémon's move inflicts will be cured instantly after the attack. Lightningrod and Storm Drain still divert attacks in double or triple battles, but will not prevent attacks when they land (and will not make any Electric- or Water-type attacks hit with 100% accuracy, respectively).
Generation V
When a Pokémon with Mold Breaker is brought out, the message "<name> breaks the mold!" will be displayed.
Mold Breaker nullifies the same Abilities as in Generation IV, as well as the following Abilities (even if they would end up boosting the power of the Mold Breaker Pokémon's move): Big Pecks, Contrary, Friend Guard, Heavy Metal, Light Metal, Magic Bounce, Multiscale, Sap Sipper, Telepathy, and Wonder Skin.
Outside of battle
Mold Breaker has no effect outside of battle.
