Effect
The Old Sea Map allows the player to travel to Faraway Island via the S.S. Tidal, where a wild Mew can be encountered.
When the player has the Old Sea Map, if they interact with the woman standing in front of the S.S. Tidal at the Lilycove City Harbor, she will fetch the captain. The captain initially claims it is impossible to take the player to the area denoted on the chart, but Mr. Briney scolds him for turning the player away and volunteers to take the player to Faraway Island, even though it is a long way from Hoenn.
After the boat ride, the player enters Faraway Island, a small island with a thick patch of forest. Deep within this forest, the player notices Mew, who flees playfully. After a short game of hide and seek, the player is able to pin Mew in a corner and engage it in battle.

Distribution
The Old Sea Map was only distributed in Japan and Taiwan, both for the Japanese version of Pokémon Emerald. In Japan, it was available at Pokémon Festa from July 17 to August 21, 2005, as well as at PokéPark from September 1 to 25, 2005. In Taiwan, it was available at PokéPark from June 23 to September 24, 2006 for people with a Pokémon Download Qualification Certificate (Chinese: 神奇寶貝下載資格證), which was distributed with each purchase of a ticket to the movie Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.[1]
The Old Sea Map was never distributed for other language versions. Instead, Mew was distributed directly in several other events for the Generation III games.

The Old Sea Map was one of the items Ultima took from the Trainer Tower in Bested by Banette. She had been looking for it in order to help her old friend, Mr. Briney, find a way to Faraway Island. When Ultima called Briney about her find, however, she was shocked to learn that the old sailor had managed to find the island without the map.
Trivia
- The Old Sea Map and the related event were both created by Shigeki Morimoto, Mew's original designer.
