Excavate is a typeless move introduced in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon that breaks down a wall in front of the user. This means this move is a mere reproduction of Rock Smash, but with 99 PP instead of 20 PP.
Excavate is only useful until the controlled Pokémon has enough IQ to activate the IQ Skill 'Super Mobile', which enables the Pokémon to break down a wall while walking into it. The uses of breaking down walls can be either to search for buried items or to get somewhere faster, preferably to the stairs. Like Rock Smash, Excavate does not do any damage in Mystery Dungeon 1.
The technical machine item that teaches this move was dummied out in the released version of the game, thus the move can only be obtained by use of cheating devices. Additionally, the machine was not included in the game code for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, and it's unknown whether the Excavate move is still in that game's code or removed entirely.
