Espeon (Japanese: エーフィ Eifie) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves from Eevee via Happiness during the day, or when around a Sun Shard.
Biology
Physiology
Espeon is the result of an Eevee trusting a Pokémon Trainer very much, then being leveled up during the day. Resembling a cat, it has lavender fur, large ears with long tufts of fur below them, a red gem on its forehead and a pair of pupiless eyes with white irises and purple scleras. Its tail, which is forked a bit like a Buizel's, helps it to foresee possible futures. Its catlike appearance and red gem have caused some to mistake it for a relative of Persian, however, this gem merely augments its psychic powers.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Espeon has developed Psychic powers due to a combination of great loyalty to its trainer and sunlight, such as the ability to predict its opponents' movements by reading the air currents. Like most fully evolved Pokémon, Espeon can learn Hyper Beam or Giga Impact. One would also assume that Espeon can learn Power Gem due to being a gem-bearing Pokémon, but it cannot.
Behavior
Espeon are very loyal to their trainers and will protect them from harm. They enjoy basking in full sunlight.
Habitat
Espeon are usually found in areas that receive a lot of light, or, more commonly under the care of people.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
In the anime
Sakura's Eevee evolved into Espeon at some point between Trouble's Brewing and Espeon Not Included.
An Espeon was also in Pokémon Heroes under the ownership of Annie.
Lilian owns an Espeon. It was only seen in The Saffron Con to test the stage's lighting effects.
An Espeon was the third and final Pokémon used by Anabel during her rematch against Ash for the Ability Symbol in Second Time's the Charm. The Sun Pokémon was defeated by Ash's Pikachu.
In Not On MY Watch ya Don't, Espeon was one of the Pokémon being hypnotized by Psyduck.
Espeon made a small cameo in the beginning of Giratina and the Sky Warrior together with an Eevee and the other six Eeveelutions.
Pokédex entries
In the manga

Trivia
- Espeon and Glaceon are the only Eeveelutions that share the same highest base stat. However, Espeon has a higher Speed stat, while Glaceon has a higher Defense stat.
- Espeon is not obtainable in FireRed and LeafGreen Versions due to lack of a time system. In order to be obtained and added to the Pokédex in these versions, an Eevee must be traded to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald Versions, evolved and then traded back, or traded from Colosseum or from Pokémon XD.
- Espeon shares the same species name with Sunflora. They are both known as Sun Pokémon.
- Its forked tail in the previous generations were thicker than its Generation IV sprites depict.
- Espeon is one of two Pokémon that can be obtained via more than one evolution method. The other one is Espeon's counterpart, Umbreon.
- Oddly, Espeon can learn Zap Cannon in earlier generations, but can't learn weaker Template:Type2 moves.
- Espeon shares type and color similarities with the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo, both are purple colored Psychic Pokémon whose shiny sprite is green.
Origin
It appears to be based on legend of the nekomata, also known as bake-neko. Nekomata are mysterious two-tailed goblin cats. It can also resemble a Carbuncle, a Latin-American mythological beast which had a jewel on its forehead. Its forked tail may also be related to its ability to see the different, forking paths of fate. It is also based on a cat.
Name origin
Espeon's name is derived from ESP, or extra-sensory perception, a branch of psychic abilities. -eon is the suffix common to all of Eevee's evolutions. Espeon's Japanese name is probably derived from the fact that its forked tail looks similar to a capital letter "F". It is also possible that the name comes from the word espionage.
In other languages
- German: Psiana - From psychic. Ends with -a like every Eeveelution in German.
- French: Mentali - From mental. Ends with -li like every Eeveelution in French.
- Korean: 에브이 Ebeui
