The Beginning

The game starts off with another variation of the traditional opening.

Rowan: Hello there! It’s so very nice to meet you! Welcome to the world of Pokémon! (Rowan appears on the screen) My name is Rowan. However, everyone just calls me the Pokémon Professor. Before we go any farther, is this your first adventure? If you need advice, I’m certainly capable of giving it.

He gives the player the options of "Control Info", "Adventure Info", and "No Info Needed". Choosing "Control Info" brings up a slideshow showing the controls for the game. "Adventure Info" gives the player a slideshow giving you a blurb explaining the basics of how to get through the game. "No Info Needed" advances the player past the advice screen.

Rowan: This world is widely inhabited by creatures known as Pokémon. (a Poké Ball appears on the Touch Screen) Here, I have a Poké Ball. Touch the button on the middle of the Poké Ball, if you’d please.

Doing so releases a Buneary, which hops out to stand next to the professor. Pressing any other button makes him say, "No, no! Not that button! The button on the Poké Ball", then gives the player the option of pressing the button again.

Rowan: We humans live alongside Pokémon as friends. At times we play together, and at other times we work together. Some people use their Pokémon to battle and develop closer bonds with them. What do I do? I conduct research so that we may learn more about Pokémon. (the Buneary disappears) Now, why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself? (the two player characters appear onscreen) Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?

At this point, the player chooses whether to play as Dawn or Lucas. After selecting and confirming the player's gender choice, he asks for the player's name. The player can input a name or just skip this step and get a default name. The player can confirm the name or not. Choosing not to confirm the name sends the player back to the gender select screen. After confirming the player's name, Rowan shows the player a picture of the rival. The player can now name him. Confirm his name, and Rowan will continue his monologue.

Rowan: All right, Lucas, the time has come. Your very own tale of grand adventure is about to unfold. On your journey, you will meet countless Pokémon and people. I’m sure that along the way, you will discover many things, perhaps even something about yourself. Now, go on, leap into the world of Pokémon!

He disappears, then the player character appears again, then shrinks into his/her sprite.

  • NOTE: Players cannot change their gender, name, or rival's name later on in the game so choose wisely.

Player's Room to Professor Rowan

The game starts with the player watching TV.

File:TV Intro.png
The TV report

On TV, set against the backdrop of Rowan's lab in Sandgem Town: "Pokémon are by our side, always. I hope you will understand the meaning of those words." That was the comment left by Prof. Rowan, who has returned to Sinnoh from the Kanto region. The screen switches to the overworld in the player's room as the TV continues with ending remarks and ads. After getting through the TV dialogue, the player should move. One step in any direction will bring your rival running up the stairs.

Rival: There you are! (walks over to the player) Hey, <player>! Did you just see the TV? Sure you did! Prof. Rowan’s that really important guy who studies Pokémon, right? That means he must have lots and lots of Pokémon. So, if we ask him, I bet he’d give us some Pokémon! (runs over to the player's computer) Oh, hey! Is this a new PC?! Uh… Where was I? (walks back to the player) Oh, right, right! We’re going to go see Prof. Rowan and get some Pokémon. I’ll be waiting outside. OK, <player>? If you’re late, I’m fining you $ 10 million! He runs off downstairs, leaving you to follow. Go downstairs. When you get down there, Mom will walk over to the player.

Mom: <player>! <rival> already left. I don't know what it was about, but he sure was in a hurry!

She will walk back to her spot in front of the TV. Go outside. When the player gets to the door, Mom will speak again.

Mom: Oh, yes! <player>! Don't go into the tall grass. Wild Pokémon might attack you. It would be OK if you had your own Pokémon, but you don't, so... Well, take care, sweetie! Exit, then go to the upper left corner. Upon arrival, the rival will come out of the house, knocking you back a spot.

Rival: What was that about?! Oh, hey, <player>! Hey! I’m going to see Prof. Rowan! You should come, too! And quickly! He runs off, but stops by the mailbox and comes back.

Rival: Oh, jeez! Forgot something! He goes into the house. Follow. Go upstairs.

Rival: ...I’d better take my bag and journal, too… (notices the player) Oh, hey, <player>! I’ll be waiting on the road. It’s a $10 million fine if you’re late! He runs back downstairs. Leave the house and go north (up). Upon entering Route 201, the rival will spot the player.

Rival: Too slow! (walks to the player) All right! Let’s get moving to Prof. Rowan’s lab. (leads the player to the grass, but player stops) ……What? Don’t go into the grass, right? No worries! No problem! It doesn’t matter that we don’t have any Pokémon. Trust me on this one. I’ve got an idea! Now listen. You know how wild Pokémon jump out when you go into tall grass? (walks to the player) So, what you do is, you scoot over to the next patch of grass before any wild Pokémon can appear! If we just keep dashing, we can get to Sandgem Town without running into wild Pokémon! OK, stick with me! (backs up a few paces) OK, here goes! On your marks... (runs forward, but stops by the player)

Voice: Hold it!

Getting a Pokémon

Player's rival stops.

Professor: You two don't seem to have any Pokémon between you? Then, what is the meaning of going into the tall grass?!

Rival: ... ...

Professor: ... ... ... ...

Rival: Hey, <player>. This old guy... It's Prof. Rowan, isn't it? What's he doing here...?

Professor: ... ... They tried to go into the tall grass because they wanted Pokémon... Hmm... What do do...? Their world would surely change if they were to meet Pokémon... Is it right for me to put them on that path...? ... ... You two. You truly love Pokémon, do you?

If the player chooses no, he will say:

Rival: Whoa, hold up! You're not making any sense here!

Professor: Er-hem! I didn't quite catch that, so I will ask you again.

If the player chooses yes, he will say:

Rival: Me, too! I love Pokémon, too!

Professor: I will ask you once again. You two. You truly love Pokémon, do you?

Rival; What?! You can ask a hundred times! The answer will never change! We'll both answer a hundred times, we love Pokémon! Right, <player>?

If the player chooses no, he will say:

Rival: ... That joke's getting old!

If the player chooses yes, he will say:

Professor: ...A pair of reckless kids who foolishly try to enter tall grass without Pokémon of their own...? It worries me what people like that would do with Pokémon.

Rival: ...Uh... Well, I, uh... ... ... Well, then forget about me, but give a Pokémon to my friend here! I mean, it was me who tried to go into the tall grass and all...

Professor: ! How big of you... Very well, then! I will entrust you two with Pokémon! I apologize for putting you through that exercise. However! You must promise me that you will never recklessly endanger yourselves again. Now, then... Hm? Now, where...?

Lucas/Dawn: Professor Rowan! You left your briefcase behind at the lake. Is something wrong here? Professor: Ah! There it is! Lucas, nice work. What I was about to do was to entrust these two with their own Pokémon.

Lucas/Dawn: Wha...?! Those Pokémon are crucial. You're giving them away? Professor: Hm! We exist side by side with Pokémon. There comes a time when people should meet Pokémon. There is a world that should be explored together. For them, today is that time. The place, right here. Go on! Open the briefcase and choose a Pokémon!

Rival: Really?! Prof. Rowan! I can't believe it! I'm so happy now that I can't keep a straight face! Hey, <player>. You can choose first. Hey, I'm practically a grown-up. I have to show some class here.

After that the player will be able to move. Walk toward the briefcase and it will open. Inside there will be three Pokéballs.

  • NOTE: If the game is saved before opening the briefcase, the player can keep restarting the game until the wanted starter pokémon is of the desired gender.

Rival: Then, I choose you! I'm picking this [whatever Pokémon is the type advantage over yours]!

Professor: Very well! Both of you have chosen a good Pokémon, it seems. Now, listen well! The Pokémon you have been entrusted with are unfamiliar with the world. In that regard, they're much like you. As fellow newcomers to the world, I hope you'll do well together. If you have any trouble, come see me at my lab in Sandgem Town. And now, we'll be on our way.

Lucas/Dawn: Professor! Wait for me! Uh, sorry, folks.

Rival: How do you like that? Prof. Rowan's really nice. On TV, he seems so stern and scary. Heheh, <player>! We've both got Pokémon now. There's only one thing to do, right? Are you up for this?

If the player chooses no:

Rival: What's with that attitude? Don't be that way!

If the player chooses yes:

Rival: I've always wanted to say this... The time has finally come! <player>! I challenge you to a battle!

Your First Battle!

Your first battle with your rival will be on Route 201.

387 If the player chose Turtwig: 390 If the player chose Chimchar: 393 If the player chose Piplup:

Don't worry about your HP for your Pokémon. Your Pokémon will know two moves, an Attack move and a Stat move. Your rival will mostly use Stat moves. If you just attack, you will be successful in your first battle.

After the battle, you will go home and talk with your mother about going to Sandgem Town. Then she will give you Running Shoes.

To Lake Verity

When you reach Route 201, your rival will ask you to go to the lake where you played with him when you were young with him to capture the legendary Pokémon that lives in the lake. Once you reach there you will see a strange man, then he will leave. After he leaves you and your rival will hear the cry of the Pokémon. But, your rival says that we can't capture the Pokémon because you don't have any Poké Balls. Then you rival will race you to Sandgem Town, but he'll be there before you.

In Sandgem Town

Once you reach Sandgem, Lucas/Dawn will bring you to Prof. Rowan's lab, but your rival rushes out of the lab before you can even enter it. Inside the lab, Prof. Rowan will ask if you want to name your Pokémon, then he will talk about entrusting you with the Pokédex. If you say yes, he will say: "Hm. Good answer.", if no: "… … … … … … I ask you again. Will you record all the Pokémon in Sinnoh for me?" You should say yes. You then leave the lab and Lucas/Dawn is waiting for you. He/She walks around Sandgem Town, showing you the Pokémon Center and Pokémart. Lucas/Dawn gives you advice to heal your Pokémon. He/She also tells you to go home and tell your mom you are going on a Pokémon journey. He/She leaves and heads up towards Route 202. If you follow them, you will see them in the grass, and they won't let you go past.

Back in Twinleaf

You heal your Pokémon and head back to Twinleaf. You can either take the ledge or go through the grass again to level up your Pokémon. When you get back to Twinleaf Town, go into your home. Walk up to your mom and the screen will go black for a minute, and your Mom will be in the little kitchen part of the house and you will be behind the counter. After she approves of your journey, head back to Sandgem Town to learn how to capture Pokémon.
