Scizor (Japanese: ハッサム Hassam) is a dual-type Bug/Steel Pokémon.

It evolves from Scyther via trade with a Metal Coat.

Biology

Physiology

Scizor has a similar appearance to its evolutionary predecessor Scyther, except with a thick, red metallic exoskeleton, which comes at the expense of much of the speed Scyther had, but makes up for it by having a higher Defense and Attack. Scizor also has crab-like claws, with yellow-and-black eye-like patterns on them that bear a faint resemblance to a Trapinch's head. Scizor has two-toed feet with one clawed toe in front and the other in the back. Scizor has a pair of retractable, two-lobed wings, similar to that of a butterfly. Aside from its primarily red coloration, Scizor has accentuations of black on its neck, chest, and abdomen, and yellow eyes.

Gender differences

The female Scizor has a bigger abdomen than the male.

Special abilities

Scizor's abilities are basically stronger versions of Scyther's. However, it cannot match its pre-evolution's speed. It is however, stronger and much more durable, and capable of learning Steel-type moves.

Behavior

Scizor are known to upraise their claws and wave them around to scare others, as their claws look like two heads. A Scizor's wings are not meant for flying but rather used to cool down body temperature; however, Scizor have been seen being able to 'glide' with their wings in the anime, by doing things such as riding wind currents, suggesting that their wings still possess minimal flight capability.

Major appearances

Scizor was first seen under the ownership of a Trainer named Shingo who thought he could always predict the outcome of a match by the database on his computer in Wired For Battle.

The Iron-Masked Marauder used a Scizor to retrieve Celebi in Celebi: Voice of the Forest.

Gary Oak used a Scizor against Ash in Can't Beat the Heat!

In A Judgment Brawl, Katie used a Scizor to battle Ash's Swellow during the Hoenn League. Katie's Scizor lost.

In Curbing the Crimson Tide, a girl named Luna had a Scizor disguise itself as "Red Lightning". Red Lightning went around a city, battling other people's Pokémon. Red Lightning would then scribble on the defeated Pokémon's face. The disguised Scizor's reign of terror ended when Ash's Pikachu blasted its costume off and Ash's Sceptile defeated it in battle.

A Scizor under the ownership of McCann battled Ash's Gliscor in Mastering Current Events!.

Minor appearances

Scizor also appeared in Gymbaliar! under the ownership of a girl named Minnie. It fought against Jessie's Croagunk and lost.

Trophy information

This evolved form of Scyther has arms ending in large pincers with distinctive eye-spot markings. It's unable to fly very far with its wings, but it can affect its body temperature by flapping them at high speeds. Its sleek look has made Scizor quite popular among collectors.

Trivia

File:FlyingScizor.png
A Scizor flying in the anime
  • Although Scizor cannot learn the move Fly, and its Pokédex entries (as well as in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon) say that Scizor doesn't use its wings to fly, Scizor has been seen being able to still use its wings to 'glide' in the anime. In the anime episode Curbing the Crimson Tide, Brock notes that the gusts of wind blowing around the tall buildings on which they stood were helping Luna's Scizor to 'fly' around them.
  • Scizor shares the same species name with Kingler. They are both known as Pincer Pokémon, though Scizor has also been called the Scissors Pokémon.
    • Coincidentally, both Scizor and Kingler have the highest Attack stat of Pokémon of their primary type, each having a base Attack of 130.
  • Despite having different base stats, Scizor and its pre-evolution, Scyther, have the same base stat total: 500.
    • Therefore, Scizor is only Pokémon which its base stats total is not changed after evolution.
  • In Generation III and onwards, Scizor is able to learn four moves that increase a certain stat sharply. Those moves are Agility, Iron Defense, and Swords Dance.
  • Scizor has the highest Attack of all Template:Type2 Pokémon and is second only to Metagross for highest Attack of all Template:Type2 Pokémon.
  • Though its entries mention using both of its claws to act as decoys to scare the foe, Scizor cannot have the ability Intimidate.
  • Scior is the only Bug/Steel not to learn Mirror Shot.

Origin

Scizor appears to share characteristics with flying red ants and praying mantises.

Name origin

Scizor's name is a combination of scissor and razor.

Its Japanese name is a corruption of 剪む hasamu, to clip or snip.

In other languages

  • German: Scherox - From Schere (scissors) and possibly ferox (Latin for wild) or oxidation, in reference to its rust-red color.
  • French: Cizayox - From a corruption of ciseaux (scissors), and possibly oxidation, in reference to its rust-red color.
  • Korean: 핫삼 Hassam
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 巨鉗螳螂 Jù Qián Táng Láng - "Giant pincers mantis".
