Sootopolis City is one of the the sixteen cities of Hoenn, the land in which the games Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Pokémon Emerald take place. It is based from Santorini of Greece.
"An underwater volcano erupted and forced itself up from the depths. Its crater emerged from the sea and became filled with rainwater. That's how Sootopolis City came into being." Referred to as "The mystical city where history slumbers", Sootopolis plays a major part in the games, as it is the location where the player has their first encounter with a legendary Pokémon, and obtains their final Badge.
Sootopolis has a fantastic nighttime view, the stars peer in through the top of the crater. To get around the city, people have to climb many flights of stairs and Dive under the sea. Because of this, many of the locals are in good shape.
In the Pokémon games, Sootopolis can only be reached by diving through an underwater cavern or Flying. In the Pokémon anime, the volcano Sootopolis is built in opens on one side so that ferries can reach it. Sootopolis is surrounded by Route 126.
Town features
- To reach Sootopolis, it is necessary to have a Pokémon that is capable of using Dive.
- Wallace, is the Gym Leader in this town. He uses Water-type Pokémon, and is the one who hands out the eighth Gym Badge of Hoenn. However, in Pokémon Emerald, Juan is the Gym Leader instead, with Wallace replacing Steven as Champion of the Hoenn League.
- The Cave of Origin is located in Sootopolis, in Ruby and Sapphire it contains Groudon and Kyogre respectively, while in Emerald Wallace is there, wondering where Rayquaza could be.
- Rare items that can be obtained in Sootopolis include TM31: Brick Break, a Big Wailmer Doll, and several kinds of Berry.
- Barboach and Shroomish can be shown to a pair of residents, who will calculate their size and reward prizes of Ethers and Elixers accordingly. In Pokémon Emerald, they will calculate the sizes of Seedot and Lotad instead.
Demographics
The population of Sootopolis is 33. Considering the area Sootopolis covers, this number is fairly low, which may be because of Sootopolis's somewhat remote location.
