Steven Stone (Japanese: ツワブキ・ダイゴ Daigo Tsuwabuki) is a skilled Trainer who specializes in Steel-type Pokémon. He is the Champion of the Hoenn region's Pokémon League in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, as well as the Hoenn League Champion during Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

A collector of rare stones, Steven is the son of the president of the Devon Corporation, and makes his home in Mossdeep City. In the Hoenn-based games, he wanders the region, aiding the player on their journey. In Pokémon Emerald, he is a former Champion, with Wallace taking his place.

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, Steven is first met in Granite Cave when the player delivers him a letter from his father. As thanks, Steven gives the player the TM for Steel Wing before leaving. He is later briefly met again on Route 118 after the player has crossed the body of water running across the route. On Route 120, he gifts the player with the Devon Scope, allowing them to detect invisible Kecleon. At his house in Mossdeep City, Steven gives the player HM08 (Dive). After GroudonR/KyogreS has been awakened, Steven tells the player follow him to Sootopolis City, where he escorts them to the Cave of Origin. Later, at the Pokémon League in Ever Grande City, Steven reveals himself to be the Hoenn League Champion. Following his defeat, he escorts the player into the Hall of Fame.

In Pokémon Emerald, Steven is a powerful, wandering Trainer who gave up competing seriously to spend more time looking for rare rocks and stones. In addition to the encounters in Ruby and Sapphire, Steven now also assists the player in stopping Team Magma's takeover of the Mossdeep Space Center by joining them in a Multi Battle against Maxie and Tabitha. Once the player has defeated the new Champion, Wallace, a special chamber opens up at Meteor Falls, where Steven challenges the player to a high-level battle.

In Pokémon Platinum, the person who gives the player their villa in the Resort Area mentions that the man who gave him the villa came to Sinnoh to collect rare stones and returned to his home after finding all the rare stones he wanted, heavily hinting that the previous owner was Steven.

Steven also appears in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, introducing himself as the Hoenn Champion. The player first meets him when they leave the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City after collecting Copycat's Lost Item, where he will inform them that there have been reports of a LatiosSS/LatiasHG roaming Kanto. The player meets him a second time after defeating Red in Mt. Silver Cave, appearing in the Silph Co. building in Saffron City and letting the player choose one of three colored stones: the Green Stone, the Red Stone, or the Blue Stone. Depending on which color is picked, he will give the player one of the three Hoenn first partner Pokémon. He can later be found in the Pewter Museum of Science, examining a shelf. After visiting and speaking to him there, he will return to the Silph Co. building and offer to trade the player a Beldum holding a Dawn Stone for a Forretress.

If the player has the Enigma Stone and enters the Pewter Museum of Science, an event will occur in which Steven will be talking to one of the museum's researchers. When he is spoken to, he will notice the Enigma Stone and have the researcher examine it. The researcher will extract the Soul Dew from the stone and give it to the player. Steven will tell the player that Soul Dew is said to be the solidified spirits of Latias and Latios, and that it can bring out their true potential. Upon walking outside, LatiasSS/LatiosHG will be waiting to battle the player, drawn to them by the Soul Dew. Once it has been caught, Steven will head back to Hoenn.

In Pokémon Black and White, a tourist who visits Undella Town in the summer mentions Steven, explaining that he is a very powerful Pokémon Trainer who collects stones. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Steven appears alongside the other Champions from the first five generations as an opponent in the Champions Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Steven performs mostly the same role as he did in Ruby and Sapphire, with several alterations. For example, the encounter with him in Granite Cave now serves as foreshadowing for Primal Reversion, and the encounter with him on Route 118 leads to him and the player visiting Southern Island to defend LatiosOR/LatiasAS from Team MagmaOR/Team AquaAS, after which he gives the player a Mega Bracelet and teaches them about Mega Evolution before they return to mainland and part ways. On Route 120, in addition to the Devon Scope, he also gives the player the Mega Stone for the Hoenn first partner Pokémon they chose at the start of the game.

Steven plays a major role in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire's Delta Episode, attempting to find a way to stop a giant meteoroid from destroying the Pokémon world. He summons the player to his help via their PokéNav Plus, first having them come to the Devon Corporation building in Rustboro City so that his father can explain the situation. Afterwards, Steven heads for the Mossdeep Space Center, while the player retrieves a Meteorite Shard required to power a device called the dimensional shifter, which is meant to warp the meteoroid away. Steven later retrieves another Meteorite Shard from Meteor Falls for the same purpose, where he and the player also meet an elder of the Draconid people. When the Space Center is later invaded by Team MagmaOR/Team AquaAS, the player joins Steven in a Multi Battle against CourtneyOR/MattAS and a Grunt. Afterwards, the dimensional shifter is stolen and destroyed by Zinnia, who calls Steven and Professor Cozmo out on not considering the possibility that the device could've sent the meteoroid to another world that would have no method of dealing with it. Figuring that Zinnia is trying to use Rayquaza to stop the meteoroid, Steven enlists Wallace's help in letting the player gain access to the Sky Pillar. At the end of the Delta Episode, a cutscene shows Steven requesting Wallace to take his place as Champion once he leaves the Pokémon League to travel someday, which Wallace accepts.

After the Delta Episode, Steven also appears as a Multi Battle partner at the Battle Maison. After he's beaten in a rematch at the Pokémon League, he gives the player a Metagrossite.

In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, after the player enters the Hall of Fame, Steven will leave a Beldum and a note for the player at his house in Mossdeep City. In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he leaves one for the player after the Delta Episode is fully completed and has it hold an Iron Plate.

Ruby & Sapphire arc

Steven is the Hoenn League Champion, having taken the position from Wallace, who turned down the title despite winning the previous Pokémon League tournament.

Steven debuted in Blowing Past Nosepass II. There, he spoke to Captain Stern about the status of the creation of the Submarine Explorer 1. In Guile from Mawile, Steven rescued Ruby from a hoard of rampaging Mawile in Granite Cave. Once they escaped, Steven considered recruiting Ruby to help him combat Team Magma and Team Aqua, but decided against it due to Ruby's young age. Steven said his farewells to Ruby and headed off.

In The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XII, Steven arrived at the Lilycove Department Store and found Wallace battling Tabitha, who had gone berserk from touching the Blue Orb. Steven revealed that after the Submarine Explorer 1 was stolen, he went to other regions and recruited the Hoenn Elite Four as allies against Groudon and Kyogre. Steven passed his title of Hoenn League Champion to Wallace and sent the Elite Four to three locations where the Legendary Pokémon Registeel, Regirock, and Regice were sealed. With a blind boy's help, Steven attempted to decipher an stone slab containing the secret to awaken the sleeping Pokémon. The slab was too damaged to properly translate, forcing the plan to be abandoned.

In A Royal Rumble with Regirock, Regice and Registeel I, Steven found Sootopolis City surrounded by a massive explosion of energy. Amidst the chaos, Steven found and rescued Sapphire, who handed him a letter she received from his father, Mr. Stone. The letter contained a decoding for the missing part of the slab, allowing Steven to finish the translation. With assistance from Sapphire's Lorry and Relly, Steven successfully awakened Registeel, Regirock, and Regice. Steven and Sapphire were then separated by another explosion. Steven, Wallace, and the Elite Four separated into three teams of two and used Registeel, Regirock, and Regice to contain the energy generated from Groudon and Kyogre's clash and prevent it from spreading throughout Hoenn. Their efforts lasted for several weeks until It All Ends Now IV, when Ruby and Norman ended Groudon and Kyogre's battle with Rayquaza's power, returning the super-ancient Pokémon to their slumber. Controlling three Legendary Pokémon for so long left Steven so exhausted that he collapsed and died soon after. With Steven's passing, Registeel, Regirock, and Regice returned to the wild.

In It All Ends Now VIII, Steven and those who lost their lives in the fight against Groudon and Kyogre were revived by Ruby's Celebi's time travel powers. With Team Magma and Team Aqua defeated, Steven celebrated the victory with his allies and thanked Ruby and Sapphire for their assistance in the battle.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc
Steven in the thirteenth chapter

In the thirteenth chapter, it was discovered that Grand Meteor Delta, a giant meteoroid, would crash into Hoenn and destroy the planet. To prevent this disaster, Steven enlisted the help of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. In Metagross Investigates, Steven had Ultima train the Hoenn Pokédex holders' Pokémon—Mumu, Chic, and Sceptile—in mastering the ultimate moves so they would be prepared to use Mega Evolution. Despite Ruby being elsewhere on other business, Mr. Stone had everyone move onto the next phase once the training had finished.

In Beedrill Prepares, Steven, Sapphire, and Emerald arrived on the Sea Mauville. The former energy plant contained a machine called an Absorber capable of fueling a dimensional shifter designed to deal with Grand Meteor Delta. That night, Emerald was attacked by a mischievous Hoopa. Steven assisted Emerald in battling the Mythical Pokémon, revealing he was capable of using Mega Evolution as well. Hoopa eventually escaped before Steven and Emerald could defeat or identify it.

In Slowbro Has an Idea, Steven and Mr. Stone used the Absorber to drain Emerald's Sceptile and Sapphire's Chic of their life energy while in their Mega-Evolved states. Once the process was finished, the Sea Mauville was raided by by Zinnia, a Draconid with a hatred for the Devon Corporation. Zinnia and her allies made of former Team Magma and Aqua members attempted to destroy the dimensional shifter, forcing Steven, Sapphire, and Emerald to defend it. By the time Ruby returned, everyone realized that Sapphire and the shifter had disappeared due to Hoopa's interference. With the shifter gone, Zinnia attempted to steal Steven's Key Stone but was convinced to leave when Ruby offered up his and Emerald's Mega Bracelets in exchange.

In Diancie Shines, Steven and Mr. Stone stayed behind while Ruby and the others went ahead to find an alternate solution to the meteoroid impact. They received a call from the Mossdeep Space Center stating that Sapphire successfully delivered the shifter. While Professor Cozmo and his assistants outfitted the shifter onto a rocket, Steven and his father traveled to Mossdeep City to deal with the public, who had learned of the upcoming disaster due to a news leak. In Groudon Returns, Steven and Mr. Stone arrived at Mossdeep. Sapphire told Steven that she sensed Zinnia's presence and went off to prevent her from interfering with the rocket's launch. Sapphire and Zinnia's clash led to them battling on top of the rocket as it flew through the air. Eventually, Sapphire was defeated, allowing Zinnia to destroy the dimensional shifter and knock the rocket down into the ocean.

In PS615, Steven and Mr. Stone arrived at Sootopolis, where Zinnia was taken to after she failed to get Rayquaza to join her. Mr. Stone apologized for trying to control Rayquaza years ago, only for Zinnia to reject it, claiming he was only trying to save face for his failures. When Zinnia gave up and stated it was impossible to stop disaster, Emerald suggested the differing factions worked together to save the planet. Together, everyone gathered allies from across Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto to assist in stopping Grand Meteor Delta. While the plan was being set up, Steven gave Zinnia a jar of Key Stones that were collected at the Embedded Tower. When Zinnia assumed the stones Steven and Hoenn Pokédex holders used were stolen from the late Aster, Steven explained he received those from the Mega Evolution guru in the Kalos region.

In Omega Alpha Adventure 21, the plan to destroy Grand Meteor Delta went underway. Ruby and Sapphire rode on Mega Rayquaza into space, where they attacked the meteoroid with Dragon Ascent. Back on Earth, Steven and the three allied regions launched a simultaneous attack on Grand Meteor Delta, successfully shattering it into pieces. With the crisis averted, Steven and the others watched as Ruby and Sapphire flew back to Sootopolis with Rayquaza.

Once everything had returned to normal, Steven was revealed to be taking Diancie back to its home in Kalos.

Platinum arc

In Leaping Past Lopunny, Steven was revealed to have spent time collecting stones in the Sinnoh region. After obtaining the stones he wanted, Steven sold the Villa he had built to use as a home base. The Villa was bought by Platinum shortly afterward.

Beldum (multiple)
Steven's Beldum

Steven is seen with four Beldum. He first used them in Granite Cave to stop a group of Mawile from attacking Ruby. They did so by coming out of some rocks. These Beldum later lined up with Sapphire's Lorry and Relly to unseal the legendary giants. One of his Beldum was also seen when Steven signed a contract to sell his Villa.

Another one of his Beldum, nicknamed Iron (Japanese: こうてつ Kōtetsu), was seen with Steven in the Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc. It is based on the Beldum the player receives from Steven in a trade in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Their only known move is Take Down*, and their Ability is Clear Body.

Metang (multiple)
Steven's Metang

Steven owns multiple Metang. They were first used to stop a group of Mawile in Granite Cave. Steven lent his Metang to the Elite Four so that they would be able to stay in the air while they tried to contain Groudon and Kyogre's power.

None of Metang's moves are known, and its Ability is Clear Body.

Trivia

  • In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, as well as their remakes, Steven states that his favorite Pokémon is Beldum and that his favorite move is Steel Wing. Consequently, he leaves Beldum in his house as a gift for the player, and gives the player the TM for Steel Wing in Granite Cave.
  • In Emerald, when the player speaks to Steven in Meteor Falls before their battle, he mistakenly refers to battling alongside the player in the Sootopolis Space Center. The Space Center is actually in Mossdeep City.
  • The battle with Steven against Maxie and Tabitha is the only occasion in the Generation III games where the player teams up with an ally for a Multi Battle.
    • It is also the only Multi Battle with an NPC ally where the NPC's Pokémon gains experience.
      • While it is normally impossible for Steven's Metang to gain enough experience in this battle to level up, enabling this through hacking will cause Metang to evolve.
  • Steven's Trainer ID number is 61226 in Pokémon Emerald, 23478 in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and 11214 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
    • The ID number 11214 is a nod to the release date of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire; November 21, 2014.
  • Steven shares his French name (Pierre) with Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City. In the French dub of A Hole Lotta Trouble, he keeps his English name of Steven Stone so as to not be confused with Brock, who was traveling with Ash at the time when the group met Steven.
    • However, from Rivals: Today and Tomorrow! onward, he is referred to as Pierre Rochard.
    • In the games where both Steven and Brock appear, Steven is referred to as "P. Rochard" (HeartGold and SoulSilver) and "Rochard" (Black 2 and White 2).
  • Despite being a Steel-type specialist, all of Steven's teams feature just as many or more Rock-type Pokémon.
  • In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Steven mentions to Wallace that he will relinquish his position as Champion sometime in order to travel the world, and asks Wallace if he will become Champion in his place, referencing their roles in Emerald.
  • In the rematch with Steven in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, all of his Pokémon have at least one immunity.
    • In the Elite Four and Champion rematch in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Steven is the only trainer in the Hoenn Pokémon League to use a Pokémon from Generation I.
  • In Emerald, Brendan and May share their battle theme with Steven.
  • If the player skips obtaining the HM for Dive from Steven's house in Ruby and Sapphire (by trading in a Pokémon with the move), Steven will leave the HM at his house in the post-game alongside Beldum.
  • In Emerald, during the Multi Battle at the Mossdeep Space Center, if the player has a Pokémon with Guts out at the same time with Steven's Skarmory, it may attempt to target the player's Pokémon with Toxic to trigger the Ability.
