Tropius (Japanese: トロピウス Tropius) is a dual-type Grass/Flying Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Tropius are large sauropod Pokémon with brown and green bodies. They possess large, broad green leaves on their backs which they use for flight. These leaves also double for sugar production via photosynthesis, to give Tropius even more energy. Despite being very big and bulky, they are surprisingly maneuverable in the air. They have long necks which they use for reaching treetops to gorge on their most favored food, fruits. They also grow fruits of their own on their necks which resemble a bunch of ripe bananas. These fruits can be picked and consumed by other Pokémon and by humans, and grow twice a year because of the rapid reproduction of sugar in their leaves, making the rapid production of the fruits in its neck. Their feet have toenails the same color as their fruit.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Tropius can wield a large variety of Template:Type2 attacks, such as SolarBeam and Magical Leaf. It can also use the leaves on its back as wings and fly.
Behavior
Tropius spend their days feasting on fruit. They are generous, allowing people and other Pokémon to pick and eat the fruit growing on their neck.
Habitat
Tropius live in jungles in the tropics, such as those in Hoenn, although they also appear in southern Sinnoh, which is one of the warmer areas of the region. They have also been seen inhabiting the lush forest lands of eastern Unova.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
Tropius enjoy fruit, especially one kind in particular. Since it ate only this kind of fruit continuously, the fruit began to grow around its neck. This is an example of a structural adaptation from the behavior of its ancestors.
In the anime
Major appearances
The first major role that Tropius had was in From Brags to Riches. A trainer named Dominick used the Fruit Pokémon and a Swalot against Ash's Corphish and Torkoal. Tropius and Torkoal knocked each other out when their SolarBeam and Overheat attacks connected and created an explosion.
A wild Tropius also challenged Ash's Grovyle in Odd Pokémon Out.
Minor appearances
Tropius's first appearance was in the Pokémon movie Jirachi: Wish Maker. In it, Tropius was fleeing from the fake Groudon that was trying to snatch all the Pokémon.
A Tropius appears in the Rota competition in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew battling Kidd Summers's Weavile.
A Tropius made an appearance in The Rise of Darkrai.
A Tropius appeared in the opening scenes of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Sapphire owns a Tropius named Pilo given to her by her father for flying purposes. She used it in the battle against Team Aqua to try and stop them from cutting volcanic activity of Mt. Chimney, and to fly around extensively. It was also taken by Ruby at one point to fly to Sootopolis City with Courtney so they could stop Kyogre and Groudon's titanic clash.

Trivia
- Tropius is the exact same size as another Template:Type2 Pokémon, Venusaur. Both have a height of 6 feet 7 inches and a weight of 220.5 pounds.
- Tropius is the only Grass/Flying type to actually learn the HM move Fly.
Origin
Tropius resembles a generic sauropod, a type of long-necked, herbivorous dinosaur. It may also draw inspiration from Mokele mbembe, a legendary sauropod-like creature said to live in the jungles of the Congo basin of Africa. Tropius also resembles a banana plant.
Name origin
Tropius's name is a combination of tropical and -saurus. It could also be a pun of 'tropism'. Phototropism happens when the plant needs more sunlight, and so turns to the available source of light. If a plant is planted the wrong way around, the roots will use geotropism to grow towards gravity and find water.
