Carnivine (Japanese: マスキッパ Muskippa) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Carnivine and its mouth opened wide

Its appearance is based on a Venus Flytrap, with circular eyes and small pupils. Instead of having legs like other Grass Pokémon (like Bellsprout), it has red and green vines attached to the end of its yellow and green-spotted stem, giving the vines the appearance of tentacles. The leaves act as arms, and appear to have three leafy 'fingers'. Its mouth can open to about 180 degrees wide.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Carnivine has the ability to hover above the ground.

Behavior

Hanging from branches using its tentacles, Carnivine is said to look like a plant. With its mouth wide open, it attracts the prey it waits for with a sweet-smelling saliva, then chomps down. It takes a whole day to eat prey.

Habitat

Carnivine inhabits forests, and marshes.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Trivia

  • In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Toxic is depicted as two purple orbs spinning around each other towards the target. However, when Carnivine uses Toxic the orbs travel erratically. The same animation is used for Spinda.
  • Carnivine is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 454.

Origin

Carnivine is based on a venus flytrap.

Name origin

Carnivine's name is a combination of the word carnivore and vine. Muskippa is derived from Dionaea muscipula, the scientific name for the venus flytrap, and 空きっ腹 sukippara, meaning "hunger" or 喫飯 kippan, meaning "eating".

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Venuflibis From Venusfliegenfalle and Biss.
French Vortente From carnivore and possibly tente.
Korean 무스틈니 Musteumni
Chinese (Taiwan) 尖牙籠 Jiān Yá Lóng Literally "Sharp-teethed cage". 尖牙 also refers to the canine teeth.
